Lisa THALHIMER Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Apr. 29, 2010.
THALHIMER, Lisa Mollen, left this life on April 27, 2010. She was predeceased by her mother, Maxene P. Mollen. She is survived by her father, Aleck Mollen; husband, Robert L. Thalhimer; children, Adam R. Thalhimer (Becky) and Jill T. Campbell (Louis); sister, Eileen M. Tanoury (Bill); many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and a hoard of incredible friends. Lisa's life was defined by her broad and unpredictable creativity and her spontaneous, sometimes irreverent and always self-effacing sense of humor. Her passions included literature, creative writing, collecting children's books, photography, mosaics and mentoring. She entertained her friends with humorous stories and photos on flickr.com and wrote award-winning reviews of children's books for Richmond Parents Magazine. Her skills were honed at Hollins University, where she earned a master's degree in Children's Literature and Creative Writing. While at Hollins, she won the Shirley P. Henn Creative Writing Award for the first chapter of her unfinished book on Chomanesh, a fictional Ethiopian Jewish girl who fled the country in Operation Moses. In lieu of flowers, Lisa requested that gifts be made to The Community Foundation, 7501 Boulders View Drive, Suite 110, Richmond, Va. 23225, for the Lisa M. Thalhimer Children's Literacy Fund, which the foundation will use to support charitable organizations that encourage children in grades 2 through 12 to write creatively and to engage in other forms of creative expression. Lisa's family wishes to thank her amazing friends who took her to cancer treatments, raced for the cure (Team Zoom), meditated with her and helped in every other way imaginable. Her family also wishes to thank the excellent doctors, compassionate nurses and dedicated volunteers at the Massey Cancer Center, who did all they could to help Lisa fight this disease. To the end, Lisa never let cancer define who she was. Her humor, positive attitude and gratefulness for the many good things in life prevailed and will forever bind together all who loved her. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (today), April 29, at Congregation Beth Ahabah, 1111 W. Franklin Street. Interment Hebrew Cemetery.

David and I were out of the country when you passed away. We know that the grace with which you lived your life will be missed by all of us that knew you. Your family will miss you the most, but the lack of your presence in this world will be felt by us all. May we all find strength in the memory of your beautiful smile. Lesley Greenberg

I was lucky enough to know Lisa when I was Adam and Jill's babysitter. Today, my children and husband are the beneficiaries of the example she set. A truly loving wife and mother, Lisa knew how to enjoy life, family and friends. The world was better for her presence, and you have my very deepest sympathies.

Lisa was one of my friends on Flickr. I didn't know her personally, but I felt like I did. She was an incredible writer and photographer. Her humorous stories and photography I will never forget. She touched my life and many others. I will miss you Zoom. but I know you are telling your funny stories in Heaven and you are free from your pain. Rest in peace dear friend.

I knew Lisa as Zoom in Tight on Flickr.com, a photo-sharing site where she entertained us with her humorous stories and great photographs. Flickr has been filled with tributes to her these past few days--which clearly shows that even without knowing any of us personally, she touched our hearts and we all considered her a dear friend. She will be missed.

I am truly saddened to hear of Lisa's passing. I remember her from when I was in middle school at Collegiate. She taught a creative writing class at one point, and she was so encouraging and enthusiastic about writing and teaching us to use words/stories to express ourselves . I used to see her occasionally growing up in Richmond and I always remember her warmth, her smile and her kindness. I am so sorry for your loss and will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Hillary Roberts Chojnacki

To Bobby, Adam and Jill,
I only knew your mother from afar, but she touched my life with her book knowledge and her fantastic sense of humor. I purchased many classic children's books from her that my grandchildren will enjoy for years to come.
In deep sympathy,
Carolyn Frahm

Lisa and I were childhood friends who reconnected on Facebook (and played Scrabble!). I remember her as a spunky, funny kid - and have followed her progress through cancer. She had the best attitude and always a winning smile! May the family be blessed and comforted during this difficult time knowing they are still and always surrounded by Lisa's love.

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Lisa on a project several years ago. She was a gracious person who was a devoted caregiver to her late grandmother. I wish I'd gotten to know her better. May you find comfort in your memories of her.
