BROWN, Lois LaVelle, 94, of Richmond, Va., died November 10, 2009. Born in Waynesboro, Va., November 25, 1914, the daughter of the late Rev. Charles Henry and Ruth LaVelle Patterson Phipps, she was a graduate of Waynesboro High and Fredericksburg State Teachers College (Mary Washington). In 1940, she married John S. Brown, a graduate of Union Seminary. Devoting her life to her family and church, she specialized in visiting the homebound and in the instruction and nurture of children in Jewell Valley and South Boston, Va.; in Shelby and Raleigh, N.C.; and in Richmond. She is survived by Steve and Jodi Brown of Seattle, Wash.; Barbara Brown of Richmond; Pete and Donna Brown of Wilmington, N.C.; Ruth Brown, of Exmore, Va.; grandchildren, Bill Brown of Washington, D.C., David Oehler of Wilmington, Chris and Katie Brown of Seattle, Eric Brown of Atlanta, Austin Brown of Raleigh, and Ben Brown of Wilmington; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Lindsay Powell of Wilmington; sisters, LaVelle Pool of Waynesboro, Margie Lee Shick of Temperance, Mich., and Ruth Metzel of Richmond; a brother, Bill Phipps of Richmond; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; son, Jim Brown; sister, Rosa Gilmer Williford; an infant brother; and brother, Charles Henry Phipps Jr. A graveside service will be observed at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 21, at Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro, Va., followed by a memorial service at 3:30 p.m. at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be designated to Ginter Park Presbyterian Church, 3401 Seminary Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227.
