MACON, Marion Pate, 88, of Williamsburg, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2010, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. Marion was born on May 9, 1921 in Charlottesville, Va., and was the daughter of James Ernest Pate and Minnie Davis Pate. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, James B. Macon of Kentucky; and three great-grandchildren. Marion was voted "Miss Williamsburg" in 1941 and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1942. She married Jimmy that same year, and they lived in Culpeper, Va., and Richmond, Va., before retiring to Williamsburg in 1985. Marion worked as a librarian in the Henrico Public Schools and Sacred Heart School in Richmond. She was an active participant in the William and Mary Alumni Association, and volunteered at the College Admissions Office, the Muscarelle Museum, the Williamsburg Garden Club, and Sentara Hospital. Marion was an avid Bridge player and golfer. She will be remembered for her deep devotion to her husband and her love for her children. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Williamsburg, with a reception following the service at the Williamsburg Inn, 136 East Francis St., Williamsburg. It was my great honor and pleasure to care for Mr. and Mrs. Macon while employed by Williamsburg Landing. Although I moved on from Williamsburg Landing some time ago, I remember Marion fondly. She was a kind soul and very devoted wife. My thoughts are with Jim and the family during this difficult time. God Bless.

Dear Bobby and Susan

Kate Donnahoe Vaughn called me today about your mother. She was a special person to my mother and dad and to me. She was mother's best friend and I treasured my relationship with her and your dad. I have such fond memories of our families and the times we spent together. One of my favorite memories was your mother's call to my mother to tell her she was expecting Susan. I overheard the conversation--it was quite a wonderful surprise.

Your mom always welcomed me on my visits to Virginia and she was so proud of both of you and your families. She kept me in touch with you and all of our Richmond friends. She was such an intelligent and fun person. She and your dad were very much a part of the things that subtly molded and added fun and color to my life.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your loss. Celebrate her and her life. She is missed.
