Robert Morris Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Jun. 6 to Jun. 7, 2010.
MORRIS, Robert Melton "Pete", 94, of Richmond, died June 4, 2010. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Barbara Noel Moody Morris; and his daughter, Jane Morris Alford and her husband, R. Kent Alford of Richmond; other surviving relatives include his niece, Marilyn Logan Morris of Nags Head, N.C.; and his cousin, Kitty S. Booze of Buchannon, Va. He was predeceased by his parents, George Robert Morris and Winnie Denton Morris; his sister, Annie M. Morris; and brother, Franklin Calloway Morris. Pete was born October 9, 1915 in Norwood, Va. and grew up in Beaverdam, Va. He graduated from Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Va. with a BS Degree in Chemistry and married Barbara Noel Moody on July 6, 1940. They were to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary next month. After a successful career at Philip Morris, Pete retired in 1980. His scientific contributions led to publications and patents. To remain active he kept accounting records for several restaurants, volunteered preparing tax returns and sold real estate. He was a devoted member of Reveille United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees over the years. Pete was an active member of the American Chemical Society and was a true sports enthusiast. Baseball was his passion, but regularly attended college football and basketball games, no matter what teams were playing. When not attending games, his daily schedule revolved around what games were on television, not wanting to miss any. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 6, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A family graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2010 at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be held later that day at Reveille United Methodist Church, 4200 Cary Street Rd., Richmond, Va. at 3 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2010. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reveille United Methodist Church.
