Waverly Hawks Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Oct. 5 to Oct. 6, 2010.
HAWKS, Waverly Benjamin, born April 25, 1913, in Norlina, N.C., passed away October 3, 2010. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Helen Taylor Hawks; and is survived by his son, Richard L. Hawks and his wife, Betty; his daughter, Gayle H. Bynum and her husband, Patrick; his grandchildren, David Hawks, Megan Hawks, Scott Saunders, Benjamin Saunders and his wife, Kim, Riley Shaia and her husband, Wayne, Molly Bynum, Ross Bynum and his wife, Cara; six great-grandchildren; his brother, William H. Hawks and his wife, Ann, of Warrenton, N.C.; and sisters-in-law, Catherine Hawks of Warrenton, N.C., and Shirley Hawks of Norlina, N.C. Although grateful for the 97 years he was with us, Waverly's family and friends will dearly miss his easy manner and the wonderful sense of humor he brought to our lives. "He set the standard," as one of his grandsons said, "for the rest of us and showed us how to love life by embracing it with equal grace in good times and bad." A celebration of Waverly's life will be held on October 10, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the home of Gayle and Pat Bynum, 3205 Brook Road, Richmond, Va. Arrangements by the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St.
