Dearest Mrs. Avery, Sue, and Mary, I am so sorry to hear of your Father's passing. I hope all the loving memories you have shared with him will help you through this difficult time. I will always remember him very fondly...his smile and calm manner towards me when Mary and I were in school so many years together in Savannah. With my deepest sympathy, Laura Chapman Benson

Dear Sue, I am thinking of you and missing, missing Bill! It was such fun when you and he and I were all at the Owens-Thomas House together with our original crew. How you deserved that Hollowbush award! I especially remember when Bill humored me and drove all the way out to Rose Dhu to collect Dolly and she wouldn't come. He was such a dear. And what a coincidence to leave Savannah for Williamsburg and have his cousin Al Louer as my boss. My love to you and your family. Hope to see you in person in the New Year. Olivia Alison

Bill was much beloved by everyone at the Owens-Thomas House. He and Sue were here every Sunday afternoon for many years, greeting our guests with their sunny smiles and serving as excellent examples of Southern gentility to our many student docents, who appreciated them so.
With love to Sue,
Staff at Telfair's Owens-Thomas House.

To everyone in my soon to be family:
Papa Avery was a great man! There are many good memeories from the short three years that I knew him that I will neevr forget. I thank God that he was a part of Emmett, Ashley, and Elizabeth's life. He taught them so much and helped make them the great people that they are. I am very thankful to have met him and to have gotten to get to know him as well as the rest of this family. My thoughts are with all of you.

The entire Christchurch School sends our deepest sympathy. He was a member of the great class of 1947. As the Director of Alumni Relations I remember in 2006 a very nice letter of his regret to be in attendance to reunion weekend. He shared in that letter information on his Bishop Award that he so cherished.
HIs classmates are quoted " Bill Avery was a very good tackle in 1947."
We will all miss his passion for Christchurch School.
We will light a candle in honor at reunion weekend on June 12, 2011. All memories of him will be everlasting. He touched many people’s lives that crossed his path, in and around Christchurch School.

I wish I had had more time to get to know Mr. Avery (a.k.a. Papa Bear) better, but when I consider the generosity, selflessness, and just pure goodness of his wife and daughters, I can't help but know what a GREAT man he was. He will be missed every day. Mrs Avery, Susan and Mary, my heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with each of you at this difficult time. Although I can't be with you in person, I, too, am celebrating his life down here in Pensacola. God be with you all!
All my love and sincerest condolences,
Cathy
