Beverly Lovasz Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Sep. 30 to Oct. 1, 2011.
LOVASZ, Beverly Elizabeth Sammis, 61, of Midlothian, Virginia passed away peacefully, Wednesday evening in her home in the presence of her loving husband and three children after a two and a half year battle with cancer. Born on May 30, 1950 in Newark, New Jersey to Emily and George Sammis, Bev demonstrated a sincere interest in others and a passion for life from the start. Upon completing high school in New Jersey, Bev moved to Pennsylvania, where she thrived at Waynesburg College, and where she met and fell in love with Joseph Lovasz, of Fords, New Jersey. Following their graduation, Bev and Joe married on September 30, 1972 and settled in Belleville, New Jersey. After transfers first to Charlotte, North Carolina and then to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and after taking time off to raise her three children, the first of whom arrived in 1974, Bev embraced what would be her life's work by becoming a Spanish teacher at Bishop Sullivan High School in Baton Rouge, where she worked for four years. Shortly after another transfer to Midlothian, Virginia in 1989, Bev began to teach Spanish at Midlothian Middle School. Combining her love of children with her talent for language, Bev quickly earned the respect of countless students, parents, colleagues and community members over the course of her career as an educator. She worked tirelessly to ensure that her students reached their potential, bringing her work home with her regularly. She touched the lives of countless teenagers during her 18 years at Midlothian Middle. She shared her love of learning with her three children and instilled in them her determination and strong moral fiber. Bev is survived by her loving husband, Joseph, of Midlothian, Virginia; her three children: son, Joseph and daughter-in-law, Cherie Lovasz; daughter, Michelle and son-in-law, Jonathan Hoganson; and daughter, Sharon and son-in-law, Kurt Vernon; her eight beloved grandchildren, Carter and Nathan Lovasz, Dylan, Taylor and Ayden Hoganson, and Anne, Allison and Joseph Vernon. She is also survived by her parents, Emily and George Sammis, her sister, Dorothy and brother-in-law, George Tiedeman; and her sister-in-law, Barbara; and brother-in-law, Robert Allan. Visitation will be held on Sunday, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Chesterfield Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 14301 Ashbrook Parkway. For more information, call 804-639-4975. Jon and Michelle,
Chuck and I want you to know that we are thinking of you both and all the members of the Lovasz family at this time. I especially have such fond memories of meeting Beverly at the picnic in Alexandria for Dylan and Taylor's 2nd birthday. I told MaryLee
what a gracious lady your mom was, Michelle. I knew immediately where you had gotten your warmth. I am so glad that we had the pleasure of meeting her on that special occasion. You are in our most prayerful thoughts. Please know that we love you.

Please accept my sincere sympathies in the loss of your daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She cherished her family and chose life for as long as she was able because she loved all of you so much.
In the neighborhood, Bev was known as a good friend and neighbor. It is a testimony to her life that many devoted friends stood by her side as she traveled such a difficult path in the last few years. Bev’s special qualities live on in all of you, the loves of her life.
Bev and I knew one another for nearly two decades. She was the first Spanish teacher to our sons, a colleague at department chair meetings and a cheerleader for the Spanish Immersion Center. In all those roles, she displayed a calm and reassuring presence, a serenity that came from within. Her opinions were valued because they were formed after quiet observation. Thank you for sharing the best part of your lives with us.

Mrs Lovasz was a long time patient at the eye doctors office I use to work for. She was always a breath of fresh air and a ray of sunshine, one of the warmest patients I can remember. So sorry to hear of her passing, my deepest condolences.

Dear Michelle and Jon,
We are so sorry to learn of your mother's death. It is never easy to accept the death of a parent, and yet most of us face that painful experience. We are also thinking about your grandparents, Michelle, and how devastating it must be to lose their beautiful daughter. Please know that our thoughts are with you and your family at this time. Upon her arrival at Midlothian Middle School, it did not take long for Mrs. Lovasz to distinguish herself as an exemplary teacher of Spanish, a leader in world languages education, and an asset to Chesterfield County Public Schools. Through the years, Bev’s passion for and expertise in the teaching/learning process influenced countless learners to engage themselves in and love language learning.

As a department chair, Bev quickly earned the respect of her peers. Graciously and with her beautiful smile, she demonstrated leadership--at the county and state levels--that helped to advance language learning for proficiency: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing the language while negotiating in the cultures of the language. She was a master teacher and vibrant leader.

To the Lovasz family: Please know that Bev endeared herself to us all. And while she will be missed sorely, her legacy lives on in the World Languages Program in Chesterfield County Public Schools and beyond. May your fond memories and your faith bring you comfort!

Mrs. Lovasz (Bev) was my eighth grade Spanish teacher '93-'94. I remember her this many years later as having a formative impact on my life as a person and a student. She was a special lady with a big heart, and I will never forget her. I am so sorry for the loss of your wife and mother. You all are in my thoughts and my heart.
