Elizabeth Cairns Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Cairns of West Norriton, passed away May 14, 2013 after a brief illness at the age of 83.
She was the devoted daughter of Emily and Burton Brown. Raised in North Hills, Pa., Betty graduated from Springfield High School and went on to graduate from business school. After a long career in the business world, Betty retired from General Electric as an administrator in their aero-space division.
Betty returned to the area in which she grew up to lend support to her parents and finish her career with GE. For over twenty years Betty contributed her business expertise, energy, and generosity to the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pa. Betty will be remembered for her quick wit, keen intellect, fierce independence, love of animals, and devotion to the Elmwood Park Zoo.
She will be missed by the Travis family, especially Janet, and Betty's three cousins: Karen, Richard and Tom.
She can be remembered through contributions to the Elmwood Park Zoo of Norristown, Pa.
Relatives and friends are invited to her graveside service on Monday May 20, 2014 at 9:45 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn Pa.

I was very lucky to have been a friend of Betty's. She was a lovely lady and very passionate about her cats and The Elmwood Park Zoo. Betty and I became friends when she was on the Board of Directors of the Elmwood Park Zoo as secretary and we would have to compare meeting notes. We had lunch a couple of times ( especially Chinese her favorite). She will be missed very much. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Janet and her family, she loved you dearly.

So sorry to hear of Betty's passing. We lost touch many years ago but she was one of the first people I met when I started working at GE (Matsco) in King of Prussia....we shared an office area. She had such passion for the Elmwood Park Zoo -- a huge loss for the animals!

I first met Betty when I started at GE in 1979. She was a helpful and gracious resource for company policy and operational procedures. And she was always willing to guide new employees through the mass of GE and government regulations. But most of all...she brought out the best in everyone she met.

Betty was a dear friend. She loved the zoo and especially the cougars. She helped save the zoo many years ago and was a first docent and later docent president and Chairman of the Board at the Elmwood Park Zoo. Her intelligent spirit guided the zoo for many years and she will be greatly missed by all and especially by me.

A dear friend who I admire for her passion and commitment for all animals and especially for her love of the Elmwood Park Zoo. Betty will be missed but her spirit will live on forever at the Elmwood Park Zoo. Rest in Peace
