John Robins Obituary

Oct. 10, 1924 - Sept. 21, 2010

Friends and family of Capt. John (Jack) Robins, a decorated 31-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, who died

Sept. 21 after a long illness, are invited to a graveside service at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.

Dr. Robins, a Benicia resident for the past 24 years, will be buried with full military honors. He was 86.

Dr. Robins served as a corpsman in the Pacific Theater during World War II and as a surgeon during the Vietnam War, where he earned a Bronze Star. He also served in Naples, Italy, and retired from his last duty station in Pensacola, Fla., in 1975.

After retirement from the military, Dr. Robins went into private practice in San Leandro until 1986, when he returned to government service with the Veterans Administration in Martinez and established the first women veterans GYN clinic.

Later in life, Dr. Robins pursued his love of theater by performing with the Benicia Old Town Theater Group, Alameda Little Theater, Concord Music Theater, and Vallejo Music Theater. Some of his favorite performances were in "The Man Who Came to Dinner," "Sugar Babies," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "A Christmas Carol" and "Tom Sawyer."

Dr. Robins was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Military Officers Association of America and the American Legion, and was a member of the First Marine Reserve Association and the St. Andrews Society of San Francisco.

Dr. Robins is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Snow Robins; four grown children, Jessica (John) Gamel of Louisville, Robert (Kimberly) Robins of Essexville, Mich., Derek (Lynn) Robins of Houston and Anthony Robins of Benicia; and seven grandchildren, James and Charlotte Schumacher, and Chelsea, Jonathan, Emily, Timothy and Caroline Robins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to UNICEF or your favorite charity.
