Stella Oley Obituary

Stella M. Oley, 90, formerly of Laflin, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, in the Mountain View Care Center, Scranton, Pa. Her husband of 64 years was the late Michael J. Oley.
She was born in Brockton, Mass. on June 7, 1919. She was the last of the generation of four children of the late Michael and Pauline Roman Kasalis.
She was a graduate of Jenkins Township High School. During her lifetime she was a skilled seamstress. She was a former mayor of her neighborhood at Mountain View Care Center as well as a member of the Red Hat Society. She was an avid bingo player.
She also will be remembered for her devoted participation in religious services at Mountain View. She was a charter member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Laflin.
She also was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Buskirk; and brothers Alex and Arthur Kasalis.
Surviving are her daughter, Carol Smigiel and husband, Vince, Moosic; her sons, Richard Oley and wife, Rosemary, Elysburg, and Norman Oley and wife, Donna, Elysburg; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. from the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home, 136 Maffett St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Laflin with the Monsignor Philip A. Gray as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Slovak Catholic Cemetery, Exeter.
Family and friends may call Monday from 7 until 9 p.m. Her family wishes to express their sincerest gratitude to the entire Mountain View staff, and especially her “Alcore Family.” In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Mountain View Care Center, 2309 Stafford Ave., Scranton, PA. 18505.

i will miss stella aka downma she used to tell me tht i waz her fav. b/c i waz not a teenager so i guess im not her fav. anymore. She waz a very caring person everytime i would visit her i would get somethingn everytime i would offer her something she wouldnt take it. Just da point tht im tryin to say iz tht i will miss u ilu n dont forget it rip

I will miss my Stella so much. I was one of her nurses on Alcore and we had a special bond. She would tell me so many stories of her past and I really enjoyed our time spent together. She always said I was like one of her grandchildren. I will never forget what a great person she was. I love and miss her so.
