Theodore Paul Smith, 79, of 23 Park Lane, Milton, died after a long illness on Wednesday morning, October 15, 2008, at Kramm Healthcare Center, Milton.
Born in Bloomsburg, on April 15, 1929, he was a son of the late Theodore P. Smith Sr. and Helen Gensemer Smith Kennedy. Following the death of his father, he became the stepson of John B. Kennedy.
He was married for more than 54 years to the former Emilie Jones, who survives.
Ted graduated from Kingston High School in 1947, attended Wilkes University and served in the U.S Air Force for four years during the Korean War. In 1957, he graduated from Millersville University, and in 1969 earned a master’s degree in art from the Pennsylvania State University.
In 1989, he retired from the Township of Ocean School District in Oakhurst, N.J., where he was a senior high school art teacher and, for many years, chairman of the art department. Earlier, he had taught in various areas in Pennsylvania.
Ted was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Milton, the Pennsylvania State Alumni Association, the National Education Association, and the New Jersey Retired Educators Association. He was also a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. Over the years his sculpted works have traveled in the collection of the United States Information Agency. They also belong to many private owners.
He was preceded in death by two stepbrothers, John L. Kennedy and Charles C. (Skip) Kennedy.
He is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Theodore Paul and Carmel A. Smith; and a granddaughter, Carly N. Smith, Oakhurst N.J.; a brother, Thomas R. Smith, St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada; a sister, Mary Helen Abbott, Myrtle Beach S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 1, at noon at the First Presbyterian Church in Milton. Officiating will be the Rev. Stephen G. Shirk. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends and relatives will be received at the church on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ted’s memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 255, Milton, PA 17847 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements are under the care of the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton.
