Time doesn't erase memories, it was a great blessing to meet with Lou again after many years. I still miss his laugh, emails, an our connections to trains, trolleys, self-propelled rail cars. My Central Vermont Railway Brill car is nearing completion, connections to Germany and Korea there too. Peace is with you, Lou. I'm thankful for that.

Time has a way of seeming just a moment ago and a long time ago depending on the circumstances. In this situation it feels very recent. Have a tin figure on my desk of a man guiding a Bavarian beer wagon. It reminds me of Lou as I bought this in Germany many years ago near the Hacker family ancestral homestead in northern Bavaria. Prayers that everyone, especially Mina and Tasha, are at peace.

Through Death to Life, it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, and a day to admire them, but it takes an entire lifetime to forget them.
It has a been a long journey from the U.N. Forces 8th Army Honor Guard- Korea where I had the honor in meeting you where our friendship kindled.
No distance of place or lapse of time Lou can lessen the friendship of those who served thoroughly persuaded of each other's worth.
I wish that where I am they also may be with me ... John 17:24-26

I wish I'd known Lou. I hope when I die someone writes an obituary that captures my spirit as well as this one does Lou Hacker's. I never met him, yet I feel I know him through these words, and certainly better than if I'd only driven by his house. Kudos to the person who captured his essence in this way. Our society needs more Lous. This snapshot of Lou's life speaks to all of us about the difference between how things appear and how they really are. At the same time, it shows that one can celebrate a life with humor while grieving a life that left such a deep imprint. I sense that Lou is still smiling, and shepherding the dissemination of what may have appeared to others as his collection of junk.
I hope Lou's obituary and these comments are made into a book and published, giving this generous man a life eternal for all who read it; and the world a lesson on how life can be celebrated, even as it is lost. I am moved by his legacy of generosity and kindness and collection of stuff, as are others who only knew him though these words, yet felt compelled to honor him by commenting here or sharing through Facebook and email.
BTW, are there any '82 diesel Vanagon parts out there in the yard?

Life is Eternal
I am standing upon the seashore
A ship at my side spreads his white sails to the
morning breeze ands heads out to the blue ocean
He is an object of beauty and strength
And I stand and watch him until at length he hangs like a
speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to meet.
Then someone at my side says, "There, he's gone!"
Gone where? Gone from my sight that is all.
He is just as large in mast and hull as he was when he left my side, and just as able to bear his load of living freight to the place of destination.
And just at that moment when someone at my side says, "There! He's gone!" there are other eyes watching him coming. And other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There! He comes!"

Sounds like a great guy and someone should call Mike and Frank of American Pickers for his stuff! Would make a great episode and tribute.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Lou almost my whole life. His father and my father served in WWII together and stayed friends after the war. We lived in NJ and every summer we would spend several week with the Hackers at Knickerbocker Lake. Lou and I shared many a good time. I have many memories and stories. I was the oldest child of three in our family and I guess I looked up to Lou as an older brother, he was 2 years older. Tasha and Mina I grieve with you at the loss of such a wonderful soul.

I was fortunate to get to know Lou during his years at MOTOR Information Systems and have especially fond memories of the time we were able to spend together on a company sponsored cruise 25 years ago. I can still picture Lou encouraging me to join Mina in a polka dance on the ship - my first and last one ever! Rest in peace, friend.

I know Lou and was saddened to hear of his departure from this life. The obit was brought to my attention by a friend who thought it was most interesting and unusual. Lou and I (and Elsie and Walt) became friends when we all worked at Bob Howard Realty. Lou's interest in BMWs and Triumph TR3s was right in my wheelhouse because at that time I owned one or two of each. I even remember taking the TR3 to a few company picnics at Knickerbocker Lake. I too eventually evolved into a landlord and used to see Lou at Home Depot or Lowes or just out and about which usually resulted in us being late for what we originally set out to do. I always enjoyed his company and conversation whether it was about real estate, cars or life and occasionally we sought out each others advice. My deep sympathy goes out to Lou's family and loved ones. His life impression will last much longer than the sadness of his passing.

Mina and Tasha,
Anneliese and I send our deepest sympathy at Lou's passing.
I was very grateful to have found him after all our years of separation after serving together in the Honor Guard many years ago. He was the only one from the unit who went skating with me in Seoul. It was a blessing that Lou, Bill, and I were able to get together for a wonderful time at Hunter Mountain. Other great memories are the Korean New Year's dinner, visits, emails, helping with Lou's German ancestry, and hearing Lou's always happy voice and laugh. May God's peace be with you, now and always. Many blessings,
Bob and Anneliese

We will shed tears that Lou is gone and then we will smile because he has lived
Many of us have closed our eyes and pray that he'll come back
But, as we open our eyes we see all he has left
we will cherish his memory and let it live on
So, why smile in such sadness?
It's because of the memories
Of laughter shared in the past.
The humour of life, the fun and the joy,
The reminiscences certain to last.
We will smile with open eyes, love and go on
And then we will smile because he lives on in each and everyone he touched
