Anthony Cardona Obituary

Cardona, Hon. Anthony V. ALBANY The Honorable Anthony Victor Cardona, 70, presiding justice of the Appellate Division, Third Depart ment of the New York State Unified Court System, died Sunday, December 4, 2011 at St. Peter's Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Victor and Dora Sgroi Cardona. Tony was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy '58, Manhattan College '62 and Albany Law School '70. He served in the United States Navy as a naval officer from 1963 - 1967 and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was a private practitioner from 1971-1984 with the law firm of Ainsworth, Sullivan, Tracy and Knauf, Esqs. During that time he also served as a law guardian representing children in Albany County Family Court. Tony held part-time positions as an assistant public defender for Albany County and as Coeymans town attorney. In 1984, Tony was elected to the Albany County Family Court. During 1992-1993, he served as administrative judge of the seven-county Third Judicial District. On September 8, 1993 Tony was appointed to the Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department. He had been the presiding justice of that court since January 1, 1994 and served as a member of the administrative board of the courts until his passing. From 2002-2003 Tony served as president of the Council of Chief Judges of the National Center of State Courts. He also co-chaired the Family Violence Task Force from 1994-2004. He was a member of the board of trustees of Albany Law School. Tony was a member of the New York State Supreme Court Justices Association, the New York State Bar Association, Albany County Bar Association and the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Italian-American Bar Association. He was the beloved husband of Aline C. Stehle Cardona; dear father of Elizabeth Keller (John), Anthony V. Cardona Jr, David Cardona (Kimberly), Brian Cardona (Meghan); loving grandfather of Sam, Nick and Ben, Madeleine, David and Dominick; brother of Jennie Cascio, Victoria Faicco, Victor Cardona and Rita Wilson; survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues. Tony loved life, he loved people, and he loved spending time doing for others. His grandchildren were the light of his life and being a part of their lives meant everything to him. He was a man of tradition who treasured birthdays, holidays and Sunday dinners. An avid fisherman, a so-so golfer and a Giants fan all required his never-ending positive attitude. Tony touched the lives of so many people and had a tremendous respect for everyone he met. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff who provided such wonderful care to Tony throughout his illness. As a new Children's Services caseworker many years ago, the first law guardian I met was Judge Cardona (then affectionately known as Tony Cardona). We shared many cases throughout the years. He served each with compassion, honesty and integrity, and with a dose of reality as well. As he moved on, and became a Judge, he never forgot those cases we shared, and whenever our paths crossed, he always made a point of stopping to reminisce, and to ask how I was doing. He was truly one-in-a-million. May he rest in peace.

I had the privilege and honor of serving the Albany County Family Court as a Probation Officer where I worked with Judge Cardona when he was first a Law Guardian and then as a Judge. I measure all other judges against his stature. Few measure up. I had nothing but admiration and respect for how he handled clients, parents and professionals. He would read every word in every report prepared and he would put his heart into every case that came before him. He always worked long hours to make sure he was prepared for each case. He put the "Honorable" in The Honorable Anthony Cardona. I am a much better man for having known him and his loss to his family, the community and the courts is beyond words. Thank you and God bless.

Dear Mrs. Cardona and Family,
I am sorry to hear of your loss. During my time as a student at Albany Law School, I had the honor to clerk for Judge Cardona. He was very kind and took an interest in the students and our work. Even after graduation, Judge Cardona met with me to give me advice about my job search, which I truly appreciated. Your family is in my prayers.

The Cardona Family:

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your beloved husband, father, grand-father, brother and uncle.

A most honorable jurist and leading citizen of Albany, N.Y. A worthy member of a most wonderful family.

Always friendly and welcoming when meeting. It was always a happy moment whenever encountering him.

A major source of inspiration to all who aspired to a life in service to the law and wished to be involved in the political life of Albany County.

Your sense of loss must be overwhelming. May your period of grief and bereavement be, mercifully, short.

God bless you all.

Tony's Family,
When I was a CPS worker years ago, I always appreciated when Tony was assigned as law guardian to my cases. I knew he would be thoughtful about what truly was in the best interest of the children and that he respected and cared for all involved. I have since admired him, and was glad that others found him as I did--courteous, thoughtful, professional but most of all caring. The world was a better place for his presence in our lives. He cannot be replaced. Hoping these words will bring you comfort at the time of this loss. Nancy Bell (wife to Judge Eli Taub)

To the Cardona Family:
Please accept my condlences on the lose of Judge Cardona..Everyone who was touch by Judge Cardona is grieveing at the lose of him:
Even though I haven't seen Judge Cardona in years(about 22)when I did and was before him with my son and husband, he always treated us kindly and respectfully...I remember being in the hallway of the old family court building with my mom about the same time and Judge Cardona walked by us going to, or coming from someplace and said hello to me(off the bench and out of his robe--not being the judge just a regular person--that made a big impact on me that a judge that I didn't know personally, (just on the bench and in front of him) would take the time to stop and say hello when, he could have just as easily walked by and not say anything..(thinking.. I'm a great judge sitting on the bench over you, I'm so much better than you..but he didn't..)says something about what kind of a man he was, treating everyone the same..respectful and kind.. I always wanted to write and thank Judge Cardona for all he did for our family, and always thought I had time all the time in the world to...Well, now I've run out of time..So, To The Cardona Family and to Judge Cardona..A great big THANK YOU!!!

December 9, 2011

David and Family, I was saddened to hear of your father's passing. My sincerest condolences to the entire extended family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Aline and family,

My sincere condolences to the entire Cardona family. The first time I met Tony was when your dad and mine shared a room at the Eddy in Cohoes. He would always have a smile and warm hand shake for my dad even though he had no idea who Tony was. What a wonderful man! Then, the next time I met Tony was at NYOH. I was truly sad to see him walk through our doors. He still always had a smile on his face and warm words for everyone in the office when he came in, even during all he was going through. May you all find comfort and peace in the days ahead from all the wonderful memories you share.

Aline and family,
I was so very saddened to learn of Tony's passing. I remember meeting him when he joined Ainsworth Sullivan Tracy & Knauf 40 years ago and I recall how impressed with him my dad, John Knauf, was with him even then. It's no surprise he went on to have the impressive career that he did. He was always pleasant and stopped to chat whenever I visited the office during his years there. I will always remember him fondly. My sincere condolences to you and your family. May you take comfort in the expressions of love, affection and respect that those who knew Tony are sharing at this sad time. He will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of a wonderful man. I sadly was in his courtroom a very long time ago and he was the first (and only) who stood up to my abusive parent and protected and listened to me. It changed my life and rather than becoming a statistic- I am a happy, well adjusted adult with an amazing son of my own. I have always felt that it was a turning point for me. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Judge Cardona did not have an enemy in the world. He did not have a bad word to say about anyone. He had such compassion and warmth, and treated people well regardless of who they were. He had a way of settling cases which was respectful of the arguments each lawyer tried to make for his or her client. I was honored to be accepted to the Committee on Character & Fitness, which he chaired. May he continue to be an inspiration to us all.

Eating pasta with you and your Dad on Pheasant Lane in Delmar to mowing grass, plowing snow and eating more pasta in Westerlo, the Cardona's always made the Bartoletti's part of their family. When he showed up on a dock in South Florida to watch Jenn and I get married, he showed what his frienship to my father and me meant to him and I'll never forget it. What an honor it was to be neighbors with the Cardona's for over thirty years. Love and thougts to the entire Cardona family, we will miss your Dad forever.

December 7, 2011

I remember Judge Cardona when my son and I had to appear before him in his office at family court down on Lodge and Pine. My son was so not respectful resting his head back on the chair with his eyes closed while Judge Cardona was talking to him. I remember telling my son you better sit up and look this man in the face while he is talking to you. Judge Cardona looked at him and told him young man your Mom needs a vacation from you and I am giving her one. He gave him one month in a youth shelter and told me to enjoy my rest. My son never appeared before him again. He was so kind and compassionate and knew that being a recently divorced Mom that I needed some help.

A grateful Mom.

I met Judge Cardona once, approximately 26 years ago when he was the presiding judge in a custody case, for which I testified. Thanks to his very courageous decision, that child, now in her late 20s, was awarded to the parent who we knew would be instrumental in helping her to become the lovely, educated, hard working, responsible, caring and successful young woman that she is today. I was honored to have known him.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

To The Cardona Family,

I lived most of my childhood on Grand St. and I went to Cardona's Store a lot. I knew Dora & Victor Cardona for all those years. They were the nicest people that I ever met. So quite a few years later I went to Family Court and that's where I met Judge Cardona and he helped me a great deal with my problems. He also got a lot of praises from other people with problems such as mine. He was very nice and I knew being raised by such nice parents he would go far and that he did. I will always remember him and the things he did for me. He will be very missed.
