Gerrit Bruins Obituary

GUILDERLAND Gerrit N. Bruins, 94, died Saturday, February 25, 2006 at the Guilderland Center Nursing Home. Gerrit was born in Holland and moved to Colonie in 1921 at the age of 10. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from the V.A. Hospital in Albany. Gerrit was an avid train enthusiast and had supplied most of the photos for the publication, Trackside in the Albany, NY Gateway 1949-1974. Survivors include his sister, Marie Reedy of Tenn.; his beloved sister-in-law and caregiver of 30 years, Dorothy (Babe) Bruins of Watervliet; his beloved nieces and nephews, Betty Lou Sachs of Calif., Robert and John Reedy of Tenn. and DebbyAn Lansing of Watervliet; great-uncle of Scott Lansing. He was predeceased by two brothers, Nicholas Bruins and Jacob Bruins. A special thank you to the Guilderland Center Nursing Home for all the great care they have given over the past several years. At the request of Gerrit and his family, there will be no viewing hours. Interment will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.

While I regret his passing, I am sure thqt he is at peace with his family. His photographs will be a source of great interest and joy to many more t come overthe years. I am glad that we were able to help get his work the recogniton that it deserved. God bless.

My cousin's passing saddens me. His photographs of the trains of Albany always carry me back to my childhood. I used to hear the them at night as they toiled up the hill to West Albany.
