Leonard was my composition teacher and friend at SUNY Albany. When we first met - our first lesson -he had asked me to write counterpoint using cantus firmus as the bass line. As a new student, I wanted to impress my professor. When we reviewed the work, he began smiling then laughing - I asked him what was wrong, was the work not good enough. He laughed even harder and said, I have never had a student write so many pieces. I had written over 75 pieces for our second meeting trying to impress my teacher...

From that moment on, we became good friends and the foundation of my compositions and love of music all stem from that meeting. I wish I could have spoken to you one more time.

Thank you for what you have given me.

God Bless

Leonard learned (and taught so many) from Mary, the mother of God, that our response to God's offer of unlimited Grace is always a deep and profound YES!
He will be missed at St. Michael's, where he performed so admirably for many years.

I have known Mr. Kastle for many years by helping him care for his many pets. He was a kind and generous man who very much enjoyed his canine companions and would do whatever it took to keep them healthy including feeding a special kangaroo diet to Annchen. Everyone at our office enjoyed our interactions with Mr. Kastle. He will be missed by his human and animal friends.

I met Leonard through my father, in 1990. He truly was a genius, an artist and an aesthete. He taught me about the symphonic form, and about the meaning of beauty. And, oh, did he love his many dogs over the years!

I'm so sorry I did not get to say goodbye to him. He will be missed.

Leonard’s niece Cecelia, and his surviving family and friends, please accept our deepest sympathies. Leonard began serving as organist at St. Michael’s about the time that Tim and I began attending and we are blessed to have had the opportunity to know him. We are saddened about his passing and we will miss him very much. May God’s love and your memories of this extraordinary man bring you comfort at this difficult time.

When I moved to New York City in the 1970s, one of the first things I set out to do was to meet Leonard, whose movie 'The Honeymoon Killers' had touched me, a then-aspiring filmmaker, in a way quite unlike any other film before. I became Leonard's friend and sometimes-literary-and-film agent for the next 35 plus years. His singular cinematic achievement will live forever.

I was deeply privileged to have Leonard Kastle as a friend for thirty nine years. Leonard was a genius with limitless creativity. He understood the human soul from its most divinely inspired aspirations to its most depraved and malignant aberrations. His creative genius forged these insights into compelling screenplays, one terrifying film, and most importantly, sublimely transcendent operas. An unflinching realist, he was nevertheless filled with generosity and exuberance. His death is an immeasurable loss.

Leonard selected wonderful hymns. Some challenged us - a polite way of saying we sometimes struggled to keep up! - but he always shared with us something meaningful, deepening our appreciation of our Episcopal hymn heritage. I enjoyed his formidable intellect, his life experience, his God-given talent and his gentlemanly manner. He once told me that his heart belonged to Jesus. I know that he has joined the company of angels in joyful worship of his Lord and Savior.

I will always love and miss you, Leonard. You were one of the bright stars of music and in the lives of thousands of your students. You "gave" me back my singing voice after I injured my vocal chords and encouraged my career here in Hollywood. I tried so hard to get your scripts made when I was a Development Exec but the world rejected your conversion to true Apostolic Christianity and wanted only more murder films. Those of us who knew you and stayed in touch with you will hold you in our hearts forever and never let your memory or influence fade. I loved you so much and still do. Go to rest now and may I be blessed enough to see you again, according to our mutual beliefs. With adoration, Lisa Feerick Pollison, Los Angeles, CA
