Nancy Lawton Obituary

Lawton, Nancy ALBANY Noted artist Nancy Lawton died at St. Peter's Hospice in Albany, N.Y. on Saturday evening, May 5, 2007, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer. She was born in California and moved to Albany in 1998. She was 57 years old. Reflect-ing on her childhood in suburban Santa Clara, California in the mid-1950s, Nancy Lawton remarked that her chosen path might have been, in fact, predestined. In her immediate neighborhood, in a subdivision surrounded by cherry and plum orchards, all seven children living in four contiguous households grew up to become artists. Lawton studied art at California State University at San Jose, and received her M.F.A. at the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston in 1980. Her drawings received an important imprimatur in 1982 when she was introduced to Gene Baro, the influential curator of prints and drawings at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York. The next year, Baro organized a solo retrospective exhibition of Lawton's graphite drawings at the Museum, and purchased eight works for the Museum's permanent collection. Lawton's drawings are part of the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock; the Metropolitan Museum, New York; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; and the Albany Institute of History and Art. Her drawings are regularly included in exhibitions at the Arkansas Art Center; the Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, N.Y.; the Hunt Institute for Botanical Representation at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh; and the National Academy of Design, New York. She has been represented by Hirschl & Adler Modern, 21 East 70th Street, New York, New York, since 2001. Ms. Lawton is survived by her husband, Dr. Richard Enemark, Headmaster of the Doane Stuart School in Albany, and two children, Faith and Forrest. She is survived, also, by her father, Edward Lawton, of Santa Clara, California, and her sister, Carol Lawton, of Fremont, California. A memorial service will be held at a future date. The family requests that donations in Nancy's memory be made to the American Cancer Society or the Campaign for the Doane Stuart School, in lieu of flowers.

Sweet remembrances to the family who must miss Nancy fiercely. She was such a strong yet sweet person - as I remember her from Santa Clara HS. She was voted the "Most Creative" girl the year after I got the same award and it made me embarrassed because she was SUCH an AMAZING artist and I felt less than that. I'm glad to read she went on to have a strong artistic career. I'm sorry the world lost her so young.

I was Nancy's framer for many years. Her silverpoint drawings were so fragile and gorgeous and exceptional. I still think about them. And her. I think she was just a few years older than me, with small children, knowing she was sick. I have thought of her grace when I needed it. She was a lovely person.

Dear Dr. Enemark,
Please accept my deepest sympathy on the death of your wife. I am a '63 graduate of St. Agnes, and although we've never met I am familiar with your family from the bulletins and mailings I've received. Nancy and I share more than a first name, although my cancer was not breast. No matter what part of the body it is an insidious disease. I am sorry for your loss.

Nancy was an amazing human being. So energetic, talented and so sweet. An artist, cheerleader and scholar - that's how I remember her from high school: Most Creative 1968, Santa Clara High.
I'll bet she was a terrific mom and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I was stunned to hear the news last night about Nancy. I remember her soft, sweet, and kind nature as though it were yesterday. We were a group of young designers/artists trying to find our way in the world--that was 35 years ago. Last time I saw her she was radiant with the pregnancy of her son. What a great loss. My condolences to the family.

Dear Dr. Enemark, Faith and Forrest,
I knew your Mom from the time I was 13 until I graduated from Santa Clara High School in 1968. I always admired her magnificent artistic talent. I knew she would always go far. She was such a beautiful young lady, smart, kind, and so talented. I know this is a huge loss you all of you and you are in my thoughts and prayers. I will be attending our Santa Clara High School Reunion and will be thinking of her and remembering her incredible contribution she has given your family and the art world. The world has lost a very very special person. Love to you all from a friend from 40 years go. God bless you Nancy.

Richard,Faith,Forrest, Edward and family,

The last time I saw you, Richard and Nancy was twenty years ago over an ice cream cone in Lyndonville,Vermont. Nancy giggled every bite. She was so in love.
To this day, I think of her laugh every time I order sprinkles.

Come to think of it, she IS the sprinkles on top of every scoop of life.

May God hold your hands and hearts in this painful loss.

I send you my prayers and hugs.

Like so many others, I was very saddened to learn that Nancy passed away. I lived in her neighborhood and attended school with her, grades 1-12. She was a kind, gentle soul.

Nancy was my first "crush.” For a second grader like me, I thought she was incredibly cute. When we begun to learn handwriting in 1957, I admired Nancy’s penmanship so much, I patterned mine after hers. Although I haven’t seen Nancy in 39 years, I’ve think of her every time someone complements my penmanship. Always will.

As her family copes with their loss, I hope they attain peace in knowing that Nancy’s presence made the world a better place.

Dear Richard,
I was so terribly sorry to read of Nancy's death. I have so many wonderful memories of you both all those years ago in New York and only slightly more recently at James' baptism, where I recall Nancy seated, holding a very small, Faith.

It was always wonderful to visit you both in your beautiful, white apartment and to see what Nancy was working on at the time. I have a vivid memory of some exquisite tulips that emerged during the course of one spring.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Faith and Forrest at this very difficult time. None of us who were fortunate enough to know Nancy will ever forget her beauty, accomplishment and grace.

With affection,

Jim Moore

I was saddened to learn today of Nancy's passing. I knew her in high school in Santa Clara, and was trying to locate her in preparation for our upcoming high school reunion next month. I was very pleased to learn that she had become a successful artist, and am sure that she contributed positively to the lives of many. Please accept the condolences of someone who knew her 40 years ago.

Dear Richard, Faith, and Forrest,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Nancy's death. I remember her very happily from the days before Faith was even born, on the Upper West Side, when her hospitality and yours, Richard, did so much to make graduate school bearable. The last time I saw her, she was holding Faith (then an infant) in her arms. She was a wonderful person.
My thoughts are with you all as you adjust, as well as you can, to losing her.

With deep affection,
Beth

We were saddened to received your letter with the news of the passing of Nancy. We only knew her through her exquisite drawings, but feel fortunate that we were able to share two of them with botanical artists through one of our exhibitions. Her drawing of "Ruffled Cyclamen" in our collection will be one that is shown to visiting artists, and will continue to inspire. We at the Hunt Institute send our sincere condolences for your loss.

Dear Richard, Faith and Forrest,

I was deeply saddened to hear about Nancy. I liked her from the moment we met, when your wonderful family came to Doane Stuart in the 1990's. Nancy was always natural and gracious. She radiated inner beauty. I remember her quietly arranging flowers in front of the Mater statue. Of course her art left us in awe, but the most beautiful gifts she leaves are Faith and Forrest.

Faith, you always reminded me of your mom.

With love and my prayer for all of you,

To Dr. Enemark, Faith and Forrest,
I wish to extend to you and all your family my condolences on the loss of Nancy. Upon refelection yesterday, calling to mind the two wonderful years I spent at Doane Stuart, I distinctly recalled that every morning, usually around 8:00 or so, as I sat in front of the Upper School Office, in would walk Nancy with Forrest and she always extended a warm smile and a vibrant response of "Good Morning". When, during my Senior year, working with Faith and many others in the Fall production of the "Man who Came to Dinner", I remember that Nancy helped with many aspects and I could tell she was very proud of Faith for having taken on such a large role and performing so well in the play.
While our conversations may have been brief, I remember that Nancy always asked me how classes were progressing or how the play was coming along.
She had a profound impact on Doane Stuart. I will always remember, too, that when, for the first time, I saw some of her sketches and paintings during a special interest week in the Spring of 2002, I was awed at her talent and the attention to detail she gave to her work.
May you know the loving presence of God in this difficult time and may the Peace of the Lord be with you always.

Richard, Faith, Forrest, Mr. Bentley and Spot.
I never mentioned this before but the white lights that I left on my trees long after the holiday season were for Nancy. She was always so positive and beautiful and bright I didn't want to take them down. Now that I have moved acrossed the park I will try to find an outlet to set those up again. I am so sorry for your loss but having known Nancy I think she would prefer we all Live our lives as opposed to mourning those we have lost. My prayers are with you! Love- Christine(your former neighbor)
