William Latch Obituary

Latch, William Stephen CHICOPEE William Stephen Latch, 66, passed away after a long illness on July 24, 2009. He had bravely fought a tough battle. He was born September 15, 1942 to William Frederick and Mary Ann (Weichold) Latch in Troy, N.Y. He is survived by his life companion, Katherine Was; a sister, Linda Lambert, a niece, Melissa Guzman, a nephew, David Scaringe, two grandnieces, Haley and Alyssa Guzman; two uncles, Donald and Ronald Weichold; and many cousins. Bill grew up in Schodack Landing, N.Y. He attended Maple Hill High School in Castleton-on-Hudson, N.Y. where he won the contest to name the new high school. He graduated from the Milne School with a NYS Regents diploma. Bill attended Springfield College, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a BS in political science. He was a substitute teacher for the Springfield School System for many years. He had a band with a few of his good buddies and Bill was the drummer. Bill was a forward thinking entrepreneur. He owned several businesses including CHANGES in downtown Springfield, Mass., Hartford, Conn. and at Cape Cod in the 60s and 70s. Most recently, Bill was known at both Agawam's Suffield St. and Holyoke, Mass. flea markets as "Mr. Bill". "Mr. Bill" was known by hundreds as the man to go to for that special collectible hot wheel or matchbox. Of Bill's many passions in life, car racing, reading science fiction, watching movies and fishing were his favorites. Bill had a brilliant mind, a great sense of humor, and a cackle of a laugh. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Bill was a good friend to me at a time when I sure could have used an older brother. It's been 50 years since last I saw you, the memories are as new as yesterday.

To Bill, my longtime friend, you will be sorely missed. to Kathy and Bills' Family, please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I have been a friend of Bills since the late 60s and we were quite close. In fact he was one of my best friends. I will always remember his infectious laugh, constant smile and the way he treated all his friends. He will be remembered in my heart forever for all the fun we had together, the laughs, the adventures and other calamities that we went through together. I was part of Bills Band and we use to practice in the cellar of Changes and before when it was called the UFO. We were not that good, but had great times thinking we were. Bill was an exceptional entrepeneur and had a true business sense on how to become successful at whatever he set his mind to. I admired him for that and learned from him. In fact in many ways I owe to Bill what I have become today. He was truly an exceptional person and I always enjoyed his company. I will miss him greatly but he will live on in my heart forever.
Bill my friend, I will see you on the other side some day. It was my pleasure to be your my friend.

We will greatly miss "Mr. Bill". Our Die-cast collector's club, (known as CT. Valley Die-cast), in Windsor Locks, CT., would have never been established if it wasn't for Bill's kindness in spreading the word. I for one will surely miss his stories and friendly laughter. I looked forward to seeing him at the markets when ever I could out to see him. Rest in peace Bill, you will be missed greatly.
