Kathleen Grogan Obituary

Grogan, Kathleen VENICE, Fla. Kathleen H. Grogan (Kay), widow of Dr. John P. Grogan (1932-1985), daughter of Dr. James A. Hogan and Catherine Benson Hogan, passed away on February 3, 2014 after a brief illness. Born in Albany on September 30, 1934, she was a graduate of the Vincentian Institute ('51), The College of St. Rose ('56), and Yale School of Nursing ('57). In recent years she split her time between Taconic Lake in Grafton, N.Y. and Venice, Fla. A cultured woman of indomitable will, faith and strength, she loved great books, music and art. She celebrated life and abhorred all forms of violence and assaults on human dignity. Kay survived two quadruple bypass operations and breast cancer and she lived and traveled independently until her death. Throughout her life, she devoted herself to her children, Kathleen M. Grogan of Long Beach, N.Y., Anne M. Grogan of Truckee, Calif., John P. Grogan (Rose Reifsnyder) of Minneapolis, Minn., and Joseph J. Grogan (Alexandra) of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by brother, Dr. Michael Hogan (Martha) of Morgantown, W.Va.; sisters, Anne Hogan of Tampa, Fla. and Mary Brown (Page) of Venice, Fla. Predeceased siblings include brothers, Dr. James A. Hogan, Robert Hogan, and sister, Eileen Hogan. Kay found comfort and fortitude in her Catholic faith -which she practiced daily, and she discovered boundless joy, wonder and laughter in the company of her grandchildren, Cayman Levonian of Bozeman, Mont., Zane Levonian of Truckee, Calif. and Tecumseh and Francesca Grogan of Washington, D.C. Kay will be missed. Kay always looked fondly upon her Albany memories with family and friends - living and departed -- who touched her life as a child, young woman and mother. In keeping with her wishes, a private Mass and ceremony will be held in Venice, Fla. Those wishing to make a donation are encouraged to consider giving to Father Peter Young Foundation in Albany or the American Heart Association. Farley Funeral Home in Venice is handling the arrangements. To send condolences please visit farleyfuneralhome.com.

Jeanie and I send you our love and prayers at this difficult time. I can not think of your Mom without thinking of your Dad. In my memory they were always together. Even in your mothers profound grief one could tell that he lived in her heart. I think of them at their wedding anniversary celebrated at the Lake where they had a Mass and renewed their promises. I sang for them that night. Tonight they are together again in Paradise, holding each other even as they are held in God's eternal embrace. Make room for your grief. Let it be. Let it be. We bought the Slingerlands home from Mrs. Grogan in 1996 and became extremely fond of her for her grace and kindnesses.
The love was clearly evident throughout all the years the Grogan family lived there and their many happy memories.
May this lovely lady rest in peace...
Sincerely,
Joe and Martha Pofit and family

Sempre a voi vicini.

To the Grogan children and grandchildren, and the Hogan siblings of Kay Hogan Grogan: Please accept my sympathy, thoughts and prayers on the death of your mother and sister. May she rest in peace. Through our great grandmother, Isabella Benson Kirwin, Fr. John Kirwin of Saratoga Springs, NY, and I are cousins to the Hogans. Kay was ahead of me in Vincentian Institute and Eileen was a year behind and my brother's classmate. Dr. Jack Grogan was my dad's doctor and my doctor before I left Albany. There wasn't a better or kinder family physician. I will remember Kay in Mass here at the Dominican Monastery in E. Texas where I am chaplain. And for the comfort of all of you who mourn her. After awhile, I would like to be in touch with someone in the Hogan or Grogan family about our common ancestry in case anyone among you is doing this sort of thing. Again, may Kay Hogan Grogan rest in peace with all who went before her. Sincerely,
(fr.) Art Kirwin, 1501 Lotus Lane, Lufkin, TX 75904 (Monastery of the Infant Jesus)

Kathy, John, Annie, and Joseph my heart goes out to all of you ?? Your mom was truly a great woman who unapologetically lived her life in the way that she wanted to. Her strength of character and joy she felt for each new day was to be admired. It is so sad that we won't see her, but I know her spirit will be strongly felt by all of you the rest of your lives. Kay is now living a perpetually "Glorious Day" xxoo
