Peter Glassman Obituary

Glassman, Peter Stuart ROUND LAKE The world became a sadder place for those whose lives were touched by Peter Glassman. Peter, 59, of Round Lake, passed out of his physical body on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 peacefully at home. He was born November 1, 1956 to Arnold and Anita Glassman. Raised in Saratoga Springs, his early years were enriched by the city's offerings, the East Side Rec, the YMCA, Caffe Lena and SPAC, cultivating his lifelong love of athletics and music. He was an avid tennis and basketball player, animal lover, enjoyed reading, cycling, and the beautiful beaches of St. John, VI and Plum Island, Mass. A graduate of Cornell University and Howard University where he obtained his law degree, Peter was dedicated to causes of social justice throughout his life, and directed his career to working for organizations which upheld his ideals. His kind and gentle temperament aligned naturally with his recognition of purpose as a peacemaker which led him to the work of mediation, civil engagement and facilitation. He dedicated his service to Catholic Charities, Mediation Matters and the NYS Dispute Resolution Association. He taught at Siena College, Skidmore College, and the Albany Law School where he brought to fruition a Mediation Clinic. He trained and inspired hundreds of mediators across the state, who were touched by his gifts, and graced by his amazing sense of humor. Peter leaves behind his beloved wife of 33 years, Elyn Zimmerman; cherished children Morgan and Zena Zimmerglass; mother Anita; and siblings Darshan Singh and Darshan Kaur Khalsa, Eva and Lee Nagel, and Jaganath and Jaga Glassman. He was adored by a bevy of nieces and nephews, colleagues, sports buddies and friends. The family extends gratitude to those who supported Peter during his illness, demonstrating how much he was loved and reminding us how much love exists in this world. We thank Peter for bringing so much laughter, joy and peace to our lives. A memorial service will be held at a future date. Donations may be made to education and training funds which will be named in Peter's honor by Mediation Matters, 10 North Russell Rd., 2nd floor, Albany, NY 12206, and by the New York State Dispute Resolution Association, 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 411, Albany, NY 12205 (both are non-profit organizations). I started playing basketball with Peter at the NRC in Arbor Hill around 1990. You could never leave Peter alone as he would always make the open shots. He also made a lot of shot when you were guarding him closely. Peter played hard, always chipped in to pay for the court, did not call too many fouls, and always seemed happy. He was a joy to play with and against. Peter always had jokes and was very good at telling them. Although I never met any of his family (his son did come to play with us a few times), I feel I know you from the entertaining, yet affectionate stories he told about his family.

Peter brought joy and laughter to out lives and I am very sad that he has left us. I can't imagine what you, his family, is going through. I will think of Peter and you every time I step on to the court and want to thank you for sharing him with us.
