Wilkie Colyer Obituary

COLYER Wilkie Schell Colyer, 65, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Atlanta, GA, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Emory University Hospital shortly after being diagnosed with late stage, AL amyloidosis. Wilkie, born May 12, 1949, was the son of Elizabeth Schell Colyer and the late G. Clifton Colyer and grew up in Anniston, AL. He graduated from The Darlington School in Rome, GA and Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. Wilkie moved to Atlanta, GA and went to work for C&S Bank and Robinson Humphrey before cofounding The Breckenridge Group in 1987. More recently, he enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors of PGi, a SAAS company based in Atlanta, GA. Wilkie also served on the Board of Directors of Capital City Club in Atlanta, GA. He assisted in development of the Capital City Club Crabapple golf course and in hosting the American Express Championships held there in 2003. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Most importantly, he was a wonderful father to his two children and will be missed by his family and friends. He was happiest spending time with his two children listening to waves break on the beach at his home in Florida. He will be missed but not forgotten. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother G. Clifton Colyer Jr. and brother-in-law Charles A. New, Jr. He is survived by his children, Margaret Elizabeth Colyer of Atlanta, GA and Wilkie Schell Colyer, Jr. of Fort Worth, TX; mother Elizabeth Schell Colyer of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; sister Robin C. New of Spartanburg, SC; nephews, Charles A. New III (Cat) of Winston-Salem, NC and G. Clifton Colyer III (Sonia) of St. Augustine, FL, and his best friend Gay Colyer of Atlanta, GA. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Emory and Piedmont Hospitals in Atlanta for their help during his illness. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd at 11am at Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Dr., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. The family requests in lieu of flowers a donation to be made to the Amyloidosis Foundation (www.amyloidosis.org) or a charity of your choice. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

I was sadden to learn of Wilkie's death. We went to Darlington School together and I spent time with him in Anniston. He came to Charlotte (I think) for his first job. And, if you ever needed to know a score of an Alabama game, Wilkie could reach back and tell you. Was one heck of a guy with numbers and a great person to be around. I will miss him.

Wilkie was a special person, always energetic, enthusiastic, and thoughtful. He was a great friend, excellent business professional, and a caring person who gave far more than he ever expected to receive. The world is better because of him. He will be greatly missed. Jay McDonald

I am so sorry to hear about Wilkie. I remember him so fondly. In the third grade he used to come to my house to play jack stones. I also remember he paid me 5 cents to wink at him at a certain point in our third grade play. That story came to my mind for the first time in years. Just know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Fondly, Betty Scott Noble

Although I haven't seen Wilkie since I was a child in Anniston (he was a friend of my oldest sister), but I will always remember him as being a very kind and gentle person. Please accept my sincere condolences and sympathy.
