Cecil Spence Rhodes Jr.

Cecil Rhodes Obituary

RHODES Cecil Spence Rhodes, Jr., 64, of Jacksonville took his final Harley ride home to the big blue sky on 2/20/11. He passed away at home after a year long battle with cancer. He was born in Portsmouth, VA. on 1/16/47 to Cecil and Rachel Rhodes, deceased. After graduating from Cradock High School in Portsmouth, he served time in Vietnam as a Marine. Professionally, he was a diesel mechanic for Greyhound Lines for 17 years, and then worked for Prevost Car for 23 years until his retirement in August of 2009. Cecil enjoyed working in his garden where he dared a weed to grow and he truly enjoyed sharing the bounty with family and friends. He also enjoyed his Harleys and collections of anything Harley. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dee Rhodes; his daughters April and Carrie; his sister Sandy Dunn (John) of Chesapeake, VA.; numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, wonderful friends. As Cecil wished, there will be no service; however, there will be a drop in celebration of his life on Saturday, 2/26/11, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the family home. He will be inurned at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date. Memorials in Cecil's name to Northeast Florida Community Hospice would be welcome.

Ike & Cecil were great friends in high school. We are so sorry to hear this sad news. Hope you remember when we visited you in Florida. Cecil was a wonderful, kind and caring person and we are very saddened by this news... heard of it on a high school Facebook page, so please know that others are also saddened.

Dee, our sympathies go out to you and your girls, April and Carrie. He was a great father and husband and loved his family more than anything in the world. You are in our prayers.

So sorry to hear about Cecil. Although I only knew him a short period he would always crack a joke at work(Prevost Car, 2007) and keep things lively. He loved his family dearly as he would tell me of his adventures from the weekends. He will be surely missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dee, April, Carrie. GOD BLESS!!
