Danny Brown Obituary

Molly Hatchet lead singer passes away

A funeral will be Tuesday in Cooper City for Danny Joe Brown, a Jacksonville native whose recognizable voice led Southern rock group Molly Hatchet on its first few albums.

The 1969 Terry Parker High School graduate joined Molly Hatchet in 1975 and was frontman for the band for its self-titled debut album in 1978 and the followup Flirtin' With Disaster the next year. Both albums went platinum, but Mr. Brown left the band at the start of the 1980s, citing a battle with diabetes.

After forming his own band, the Danny Joe Brown Band, Mr. Brown rejoined Molly Hatchet in 1982, but the resulting album No Guts .... No Glory was met with limited success and the band started undergoing a series of changes in its sounds and eventually disbanded, according to the music Web site allmusic.com. The band returned to touring in 1996 with the release of the album Devil's Canyon.

Mr. Brown's career ended in 1998, according to published reports, after he suffered a stroke.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Panciera Funeral Home at 4200 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood.

Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cooper City Church of God at 9191 Stirling Road in Cooper City.

My husband of 38 years and I used to listen to MH together a lot. My favorite thing was singing like Danny Joe. My then-boyfriend-now-husband thought it was amazing that I could nail that same throat-rolling growl that Danny was so well known for when I would sing along. I can't do it as well these days but I sure appreciate MH being a fixture in our early years together - and we've never stopped listening. Godspeed DJB. We love you.

I was able to see Danny Joe Brown with Hatchet at the old Hollywood Sportatorium in 1980. I think the Johnny Van Zant band and The Outlaws opened...He was one of a kind vocally....

in remembrance of a super man I was helping DJ and Bobby ingram at one show in Colorado Springs help set up thier equipment and was asked after the show to drive them personally the next morning from Colorado Springs to Denver so they could be on a plane back home I guess, and on the way up Dj said hey pull over here and low and behold it was Taco Bell. of all places that's where he said I'll buy us breakfast ill never forget that and I felt so at home with them.
one of my ultimate dreams in life was to play guitar with MH. If they come back to Tulsa where I am currently now I'd be honored to accomplish that dream of mine.
I've been told I'm one of the finer musicians in Tulsa by JJ Cales former keyboard and bass player they told me I can sit in with them anytime I like now they are RIP as well
I pray for DJ Browns wife and entire family of his and to the group of MH that you all find the peace that will enable you all to be strong and know that u all have a true friend that thinks of you all everyday even though u may not know me but, I have faith enough that we will meet soon and continue to keep DJ Browns spirit as he put it "travelin down the road"
RIP DJ and God bless to all the family of DJ and Molly Hatchet

Beginning in the late 80's I used to ride my old hardtail Panhead to biker bashes all over the east coast for about 20 years. It was a rare occasion if one of the bands didn't play "Dreams I'll Never See" and "Flirtin' With Disaster". While were always happy to hear them, they just never could get Danny Joe's sound quite right. Man do I ever miss it.

I have been reminiscing about an old friend who recently passed and Danny Joe always comes to mind. We drove endless miles jamming to his voice and Molly Hatchet (pretty sure it was their music that cracked my speakers), rocking out the countryside. I was privileged to see him in concert on several occasions and it is still hard to wrap my head around the fact that he is no longer with us. He was really so young! There is southern rock, then there was Molly Hatchet. No other group/singer could match their sound or Danny's voice. Many nights when I can't sleep I call up some live videos and just enjoy my night of insomnia. Rest in peace Danny. I know I'm not the only one who considers you the best!!!

i am currently on our"no guts no glory tour" which has landed on dega blvd...we have dedicated this weekend to danny joe and all of the band members of Molly Hatchet...i have been to many concerts but no one has ever had the energy this band gave out on stage...great players on all instruments and the man himself danny joe as frontman...we are all "flirtin wih disaster"in our own way this weekend but send out our thoughts and prayers to his family this day...the folks in bama love you danny joe brown...godspeed

Remembering Danny Joe today. Gorgeous and talented, he was the best vocalist to ever belt out southern rock. My heart goes out to his family and friends, those who knew and loved him. For me, he lives on in my vinyl, CDs and U tube videos. My favorite is his last performance at Jammin for DJB in Orlando. I cheered when he came onto the stage, his acknowledgement of Jesus as his saviour brought tears to my eyes and his performance of Flirtin With Disaster rocked me out. No performer has ever touched me as has DJB. His spirit lives on in those he loved and in his music. So, here's to you, Danny Joe for all those years of Good Rockin! Hallelujah! A fan then, now and always.....L.

It's taken a long time to write on here. The world lost a wonderful man and singer when you left. I met you in Asheville NC in the late 80's. you were with Black Oak and The Roadducks. All of you were staying at the Holiday Inn and I was the guest of the singer of the Roadducks. He introduced us and you were such a true southern gentleman. It was a night I'll never forget, thank you! I can still see you walking down the hallway like it was yesterday! Heaven has another member in that wonderful band!!!

Not a day goes by that Danny Joe Brown is not thought of somewhere, are you kidding Southern Gentlemen Danny Joe has a lot that the younger men of the south {and other directions} could learn from.
It took one evening in the Texas Panhandle that I got to spend with DJB after a show that I was blessed with his company for many hours just him and I. Danny Joe IS a ROCK STAR, but Danny Joe does not act like an arrogantShine On My Brother, Your a good man, and a wise man. Miss You Much.

We came of age in a suburb of Jacksonville (Arlington) together long before Molly Hatchet.(along w/brother Mike) What a special soul! We got together on a few occasions after he became "famous. It didn't change him a bit.He was truly a special person. I have to really struggle to fight back the tears when I know he is no longer on this earth with us.He was so much more of a brother and soulmate to me than I could ever hope to describe in words." I love you Danny, may you rest in peace.

My Brother Danny The Evening You and I met and talked backstage after the concert for hours, I felt so blessed to it being just us two. We talked of Life, Death, (you had just lost a loved one)and family. We talked of health, and friendship, things most rockers do not talk about after a show backstage. I know now why you were in my life that day, not just because I promoted the concert that night in the Texas panhandle, but I believe the Lord put us together that eve to talk. I know where you are now and my dad is there with you too, and soon all of our families will be together again and all the sickness, sadness will be gone. The best part is there will be No More Pain.
God has put angels over your daughters and mine, over all our children. Talk to you again one day my friend.

But thats me being selfish, your "home" with no more pain and suffering. You are truly free, and your family and your daughters and son will all be together again one day, and all will be good again!

I was not aware until recently, that you served your country proudly in the US Coast Guard. You and I were in the Guard at the same time. As you well know, Coast Guard members never forget their own. Our paths might have crossed somewhere along the line.

To this day, I am still affiliated with the US Coast Guard. I still play my Molly Hatchett CD's and my Danny Joe Brown Band CD's. You are truly a Great American and I thank you so much for the good that you did for our country and its citizens.
