Noble Scroggins Obituary

SCROGGINS Noble Duge Scroggins, 88, passed away January 15, 2015. Born to Duge and Cora Scroggins at the Flying V Ranch, Tabor, South Dakota, he lived most of his young life in Mabank, Texas. At age 16, he joined the Navy and traveled the world. Ten years later, he met the love of his life Mary Walker and they married 29 days later. Two daughters were born while stationed at NAS Jacksonville and they were then transferred to NAS Norfolk, Virginia. In 1958, the family transferred to NAS Port Lyautey in Morocco, Africa and then on to their final duty station at NAS Pensacola. Noble retired at the ripe old age of 36 after 20 years of service and the family moved to Jacksonville. He immediately earned a GED and then studied Food Service Technology at Florida Junior College. He was the sous-chef at the Robert Meyer Hotel for 7 years. In 1973, he began working for the Florida State Prison at Raiford. He taught trustees skills in food preparation for the inmates and retired in 1983. Noble was a brilliant man with a thirst for knowledge and knew how to provoke thought in others. 30-40 years ago, he shared outrageous ideas that today are not at all far-fetched. He loved to read about the military and war. Time and Newsweek were his beloved magazines and he treasured the daily newspaper. Noble loved a good joke and had many to share. Without reading, he would have been lost in his senior years. Noble will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary, of nearly 62 years and his daughters Cynthia (Marvin) Mollnow and Jan Burnett; Grandchildren Scott and Kelly Kline, Andy Burnett and Spencer Mollnow; Great-grandchildren Quinton Sarmie and Carson and Merlin Kline; Brother and sister James Scroggins and Willie Mae (Bill) Simmons as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family expresses tremendous gratitude to the staff at All Saints Nursing Home and to the staff of Community Hospice at St. Vincent s Hospital. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating a book or newspaper subscription in his honor to a school or public library or a donation to The Wounded Warriors Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 from 6-8 PM at Hardage-Giddens Rivermead Funeral Home, 127 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, Fl 32073. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Jacksonville Memory Gardens with Dr. Doug Axtell officiating. Much love to Aunt Mary, Jan and Cynthia. Uncle Noble touched many lives and always left a colorful memory. He truly saw the world very differently than most. You really never knew what he was going to do or say next. I really believe he enjoyed the unexpected looks on peoples face by what he did or said. His candle will always burn bright! Love you Uncle Noble.

A part of my childhood has left this earth. In the last 60+ years we didn't get to visit, much. But the sweet memories will remain. My heart goes out to Aunt Mary and the family. As their tears flow, may they wash away the sorrow, and only happy memories remain. Love to all.

Praying God's strength and comfort for those he left behind. He was a great uncle and we had some great times together when Uncle James and Aunt Nell brought me out to visit you all.

So sorry Mary, Cindy and Jan for your loss. Noble led an intriguing life. I'm sure anyone who met Noble remembers his curiosity, his wit and was entertained by him. Jim and I are pleased to have met him and spent time with him.
