Betty Penfield Obituary

PENFIELD Betty Vinton Penfield, 87, born May 22, 1922 in Youngstown, Ohio, passed away Friday, January 22, 2010 in Quitman, Georgia where she had resided for the past 4 years. Mrs. Penfield lived in Ohio before moving to Jacksonville in 1963. She worked for U.S. Steel Corporation while living in Youngstown. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps 1944 - 1946, stationed at Arlington, VA. She was a life member of American Legion Post 283 and a member of Florida 7 - First Coast Women Marines Association. Mrs. Penfield retired in 1998 with 32 years of service from the State of Florida Department of Health, Vital Statistics Division. After retirement, she was a volunteer with Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Pace Center for Girls and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Arlington Presbyterian Church for many years before moving to the Presbyterian Home in Quitman, GA in 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Hubert 'Penny' Penfield and is survived by her son, Thomas Penfield (Barbie), Valdosta, GA and daughters, Kathy Shuke (Frank) and Terry Thompson (Larry), both of Jacksonville; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and a sister, Donna Hains, Vero Beach, FL. A graveside service with military honors will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 25 at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, 850 St. Johns Bluff Rd. with Pastor William Hoff officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 24 at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Arlington Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville, FL or the Presbyterian Home in Quitman, GA.
