Clifford Crews Obituary

CREWS Col. Clifford James Crews, USMC (Retired), "slipped the surly bonds of Earth" on October 31, 2009, and now, with his beautiful daughter by his side, "dances the skies on laughter-silvered wings". He was born on May 14, 1945 in Jacksonville, FL. Cliff graduated from Paxon High School in 1963 and from Carson- Newman College in 1967, at which time his childhood dream came true and he was commissioned a 2nd LT in the United States Marine Corps. During his 26 years in the Marine Corps he flew both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. He served in Vietnam in 1969 and at his retirement ceremony in 1990 he was awarded the USMC Legion of Merit Award. After retirement from the Marine Corps, he flew in corporate aviation in Orlando, FL as Chief Pilot for Arnold Palmer Aviation; in Charlotte, NC as Chief Pilot for First Union/Wachovia Banks and in Jacksonville for Executive Flight Services. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Windi Dawn at age 10; his father, Oliver John Crews Sr.; mother, Jessie Wilson Crews; and brother, Major Oliver John Crews, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Trecia; son, Christopher J. Crews and his wife Jennifer; and two precious grandchildren, Caitlyn Jessie and Caden James Crews. The family would like to extend their love and appreciation to all of the caring and professional nurses and doctors who cared for him these past 3 years during his battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the 'Reunion of Angels' fund at any Bank of America. The family will receive friends at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11081 San Jose Blvd. in Mandarin on Friday, November 6th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Services will be at Christ's Church, 6045 Greenland Road, Saturday, November 7th at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

Just today and for no reason I can think, Cliff came to mind. I dated Cliff in 1962. Our birthdays were one day apart and we met at church every Sundays and Wednesdays. What a great memory. He was fun and a man of faith. Only one problem we went to different schools making it hard to date. Every though we soon parted I still have thoughts of him often since then. Rest peacefully my friend. Condolences to the wonderful family you made during your lifetime. God’s blessings to you all

Chris and family,
Our prayers are with you and your family. We enjoyed being fellow Gators with your dad on Saturdays in Gainesville. Even though we knew your dad only at Florida Field, we feel we've lost a good friend and will miss him. All our love, Barbara & John Neel

Trecia, I am so sad that Cliff is gone, but I am grateful that he isn't feeling sick, and that he isn't suffering anymore. Cliff is a special man, and I will always remember his sweet smile and calming presence. Thank you both for being good to me and my family. Love to you, Beth McCall

Dearest Trecia and family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Cliff's passing.

May you gain strength and comfort in knowing that he is with your precious Windi; and that one day you will all be reunited again.

I remember Cliff as a cross-country runner, I was amazed that anyone could run that fast for so long a time. He was a wonderful man and I know how much he loved you all.

With love and prayers,

To Chris and your family:
Our family is lifting you up to Him for strength, courage and love in your time of loss.

Dearest Trecia,

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Clifford. May your memories of your wonderful years together be of comfort to you during these times. Also, may God comfort your family and friends.

I emailed Wayne Hague in Leicester, North Carolina. They were so close growing up together. Wayne married my cousin, Barbara. As you will remember, we were all on Paxon's 1963 calendar.

Love and God's Blessings in Jesus' Name,

Lorraine (Hensley) and Jerry Harrelson
