Mildred Silverfield Obituary

SILVERFIELD A graveside service for Mildred "Midge" Daniel Silverfield, 86, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2009, in Columbia Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Silverfield passed away Monday, November 23, 2009. She was born in Blakely, Georgia on October 17, 1923, but spent the majority of her life in Columbia, SC. Mrs. Silverfield was an elegant, graceful, witty and loving individual who dedicated herself to her family and friends. After raising her two sons, she attended and received her teaching degree from the University of South Carolina. Her tough, but unconditional love, along with her formidable teaching skills, helped many students reach their potential. On retiring, Mrs. Silverfield served as a docent at the South Carolina State Museum. Growing up in Blakely, Georgia, Midge developed many small town values, but also developed a strong desire to see the larger world. Midge and her husband of 54 years, Leo, traveled extensively and were among the first to visit the outlying provinces of China. Midge was a natural athlete and excelled in the games of tennis and golf. After her husband's death in 1996, Midge moved to Tampa and resided in Canterbury Tower, where she made many wonderful friends and felt as if she had known them for a lifetime. Midge was predeceased by her loving husband, Leo, and three siblings. Survivors include her two sons, Gary Daniel Silverfield and daughter- in-law, Laine Silverfield; Dr. Joel Charles Silverfield and daughter-in- law, Nancy Curlee Silverfield; five grandsons, Leed Charles Silverfield and his wife, Rebecca Rowe, Ryan Daniel Silverfield, Daniel Holland Silverfield, John Irwin Silverfield, and Charles Delashaw Silverfield; two great grandchildren, Anson Helene Silverfield and Grant Rowe Silverfield; brother, Dr. Charles Ralph Daniel of Jackson, Mississippi; and sister, Betty Jo Bauman of Dothan, Alabama. Her family wishes to thank all of the wonderful people of Canterbury Tower, who went well beyond the call of duty to give Mrs. Silverfield the very best, most extraordinary, loving care. Although we should all mourn the loss of such a wonderful Mother and Grandmother, I hope that we can focus on celebrating her life as well.

There is no other woman on earth who so positively touched the lives of everyone she encountered or experienced so many great things over a lifetime. I truly feel lucky to have had someone like her in my life and will keep her memory alive by trying to apply her virtuous nature to my own life each and every day.
