THOMAS A FUNERAL SERVICE celebrating the life of Mrs. Doris Holmes Thomas will be held 2:30 PM, Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Aloysius Denard, Pastor, officiating. A native of Alachua, FL, she received her early education in the schools of Duval County, graduating from Stanton Senior High School. Furthering her education, she attended Edward Waters College and Florida A&M University, where she earned the B.S. degree in Education. As one of Duval County's Outstanding Educators, Mrs. Thomas was employed with Duval County School Board until she retired after over 30 years of dedicated service. She was a faithful member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by her son, Freddie Douglas Mack, Jr., and stepdaughter, Paula Mack- Johnson. Survivors include her husband, Carl L. Thomas, Sr.; daughters, Ms. Ceteria L. Robinson and Mrs. Cynthia D. Solomon (Robert); grandchildren, Dwayne Hayes (Diane), Dameon S. M. Mack, Tamarria T. Mack-Wilson (Chad), Demetrius R. D. Mack, Sr., DeAngelo Robinson (Shanytrice), LaTosha Solomon, and Robert Solomon, Jr.; 14 great grandchildren; brother, Ernest L. Holmes; sisters, Mrs. Lovella Jones (Samuel) and Mrs. Effie Jenkins (Walter); stepchildren, Mrs. Mary Ware (Willie), Carl Thomas, Jr. (Susie), Jerome Thomas (Linda) Mrs. Beverly Small (Newton), Mrs. Francina Collins (Buddie) and Mrs. Cheryl Devoux (Paul); goddaughter, Ms. Yolanda Stanford; a number of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Thomas will rest in the mortuary for visitation Friday from 5 PM until 8 PM ( where the family will receive friends at 5 PM) and Saturday at the church from NOON until the hour of service. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends are asked to assemble at the church under the direction of ALPHONSO WEST MORTUARY, INC., 4409 Soutel Dr. 904-766-9671

Mrs. Thomas was an outstanding educator. In 1968, she was my eight-grade history teacher. In those days, teachers like Mrs. Thomas (Mack) maintained full control of their classroom. She was firm and set high expectations for her students to excel to their goals in life. With her drive and vigor, she expected her history class to learn the Gettysburg Address or else, fail the course. At the time, I didn't understand why she made us learn an "old" speech. However, as I matured and reflected upon life, I understand why it was necessary to learn and recite an important piece of history. It made me appreciate how God use people to carry out His will to teach and prepare generations of people to never forget how God has blessed us and spared us by using an American President (Lincoln) and many others to end slavery. That's what Mrs. Thomas left me as her legacy. Thank God for Mrs. Thomas. Cynthia and family, may God keep you during this difficult time.
