TIMOTHY SUPKO Obituary

SUPKO Timothy James Supko, Sup to friends, of Jacksonville Florida, passed away on Wednesday, November 7 at the age of 60 due to Pancreatic Cancer. His family was by his side as he peacefully drifted away to be with the Lord. Tim was born on May 21, 1952 in Baltimore Maryland. He graduated from the U.S. Naval academy in 1974 and served our country for 21 years before retiring as a Commander and earning his masters degree in Education to become a teacher. He was a talented athlete and played for the Navy lacrosse team, and during his time in the Navy he formed many lifelong friendships. Recently he taught mathematics at Switzerland Point Middle School and Pacetti Bay Middle School where he touched many lives of both his peers and students. He loved his dogs, bass fishing, golfing, cooking, and cheering for the Navy Goats, Jacksonville Jaguars, Florida Gators, and of course the Baltimore Orioles he often called himself a Baltimoron. It was this sense of humor and his optimistic spirit that enabled him to battle his Pancreatic Cancer for 19 long months, during which he spent as much time as possible with his loved ones, traveling, and living life to the fullest. He is survived by his partner Deborah Powell, his daughters Christiana Winsor and Jennifer Supko, his former wife Rhonda Diggins, his brother Leonard Supko, and his dog Dewey. He is predeceased by his parents Michael and Johanna Supko, his late brother Dennis Supko, and his dogs Yogi and Mia. He had countless close friends who loved and supported him throughout his life and during his illness, for which his family is extremely grateful. A celebration of life will be held for his close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you consider making a donation in his honor to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. Had the privilege of serving with Tim in VP-49 at JAX in the late 1970's. Never a dull moment! Always kept the wardroom laughing! He was a stand-up guy who I will always remember with great fondness.

Words can never make up for the loss and the pain his family and closest friends are dealing with, yet reading these many notes from friends, students and especially students' parents - people taking time to write because they care, because Tim in so many different ways made their lives better, will hopefully provide some solace along the way.

He made me, and so many of us, smile on many days by the Severn when smiles did not always come easily. Hearing Tim's name from friends who had seen him always brought a smile to our faces and lightness to our hearts.

When news of Tim's struggles first came out the email notes spread literally like wildfire - people who had not heard from each other in almost 40 years -- friends and classmates from the Naval Academy and elsewhere reached out to each other and caused a string of emails well into the hundreds or more likely thousands - because we all knew Tim and someway he had touched our lives and we had to make sure everyone knew. If you did not know how special Tim truly was - all you have to do is see the trail of emails -- because no ordinary person would have received that attention. There were many forwarding the news adding notes praying for relief for Tim and his family -- and others, perhaps those who were closest to Tim, who could not say anything at all. Somehow or another Tim reached out to us all and caused us all to stop for a little while and remember Tim and the example he set. No pretense, no airs - simply a great guy whom we were blessed to know, if only for a little while. Thanks, Tim.

I met Tim through my brother Corky and Wally Holdstein. Also had brother Denny as a PE instructor at USNA. Tim was one of the wittiest guys ever, and he is (and will be) an enduring part of Jax Lax culture. Go 'dillos!! I believe Tim is up in Navy Lax heaven with some of the greatest guys to ever walk the planet. A great example of how to live - thank you Tim, Rest in Peace.

I've known Timmy (that's what we always called him) since 1957. I was two years older and initially friends with Dennis, through whom I met Timmy. The three of us ran around in Elementary school and High School and played lacrosse together. Timmy was a good friend, funny kid, likeable and honest, and a very good lacrosse player. I'll always remember those days with he and Dennis. RIP, Timmy.

My favorite memories of Uncle Tim are from a family visit way back in the day. I remember fishing in the swamp with him and catching a few puny fish and then just for fun hooking a 'gator, too. After a few seconds of me trying to reel in the 'gator he cut the line and let it go free. I guess he didn't want to have to take the lure out of its mouth. During that visit he also took my brother and me to a minor-league baseball game. I thought it was so cool that we got to sit so close to the field. That was an awesome day and I remember his smile and kindness. Those made a lasting impression on me.

Mr. Supko's family,
My son Kyle had Mr. Supko for 2 years at Pacetti Bay Middle School. Kyle always talked about Mr. Supko and what a great teacher he was because he made learning fun while making sure you understood the subject. I have told my son we all have had that "1" teacher we will always remember from our days in school. For my son that will be Mr. Supko. God Bless.

His brother Lenny is a Navy Lax all-time great, brother Denny passed away as a midshipman Lax all-American and captain, and Sup was the most fun of all. Sup truly enjoyed life, had great family and friends, and will be missed. Skip Wagner, USNA Lacrosse, 1977

I have many fond and wonderful memories playing plebe lacrosse with Tim - Tim was certainly in love with the game and everyone whose lives he touched - he made me a better player and shipmate. Denny has been anxiously waiting for Tim to arrive in heaven so that they could start another lacrosse team and play as teammates - knowing Tim, he's already talked St. Peter into being their goalie. I can't wait to play on his team, again! My condolences to his family and friends - we will miss you Sup!

November 12, 2012

Tim was a loyal friend to all his classmates at USNA and he thrilled us with his skills on the lacrosse field. Sup answered the call of duty to our nation and served with dignity and retired with honor. It surprises none of us that he chose again to serve others as a teacher after his Navy career. I was fortunate to also get to know his older brother Denny during our plebe year 1970-71, as Denny was a 2nd class in 1st Company and offered a safe harbor to me and other '74 classmates in Company 01. Go with God Tim and may you be blessed by your reunion with Denny and your parents. We are forever indebted for your friendship and service. Our prayers go out to Debbie, Lenny, your children and all of your family for God's peace and strength to move forward while always celebrating the many fond memories of you. Fair winds and following seas. - Rob Waltenbaugh, USNA '74

To Tim's family and friends - I wish you all the faith and peace to sustain you through this sad time. In the late 1970s and early 80s, we were a group of young friends, partying at the O-Club, Wayne and Wally's, the beach, and going to Jacksonville Lacrosse Club games. Tim was always joyous and just so, so funny. I'll always smile remembering Sup and his antics! God Bless.
