MARY GOLDSMITH Obituary

GOLDSMITH Mary Barili Goldsmith passed away December 27, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida. Mary was born September 21, 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the daughter of Alfredo Barili Jr. and Mary Hudgins Barili and the granddaughter of pioneer Atlantans Emily and Alfredo Barili, a noted composer and teacher, and Ann George Parker Hudgins and Henry Clay Hudgins. Mary graduated from Girls High School and the High Museum College of Art. She married Jere Wickliffe Goldsmith Jr. in 1939 in the First Presbyterian Church Atlanta, which her father helped design. Following World War II, she and Wickliffe, a naval Aviator, returned to Atlanta where she became active in many civic organizations while raising 3 children. Among her civic activities were: Atlanta History Center, Iris Garden Club (past president), Junior Symphony Guild, Young Matrons Circle for the Tallualah Falls School and the Atlanta Junior League. Mary was proud to be one of the first to teach deaf children at the Atlanta Speech School. She moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1992 to be close to family and was an associate member of Riverside Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville. She is survived by her daughter McGowan Goldsmith Cassell (James) of Jacksonville, son Jere Wickliffe Goldsmith Jr. of Orange Beach, Alabama, son William Barili Goldsmith (Christine) of Cleveland, Georgia, her grandchildren Leslie Cassell Williams (Bradley) and James Owen Cassell Jr. (Jennifer) of Jacksonville, Christine Goldsmith Kelemen (Mark) of Atlanta, Jere Wickliffe Goldsmith III (Lauren) of Orange Beach, Alabama, William Barili Goldsmith of Winter Park, Florida, Regina Alderman Liggins (Michael), Estero, FL, Patrick Ryan Alderman (Jennifer) Deltona FL; and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be held at a later date. She will be interred at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia.
