Surely one of the best XO on TARAWA that I ever worked for. He loved fishing and so did I. Being a YN on his staff made me decide to complete a 23 year Navy career. YNC(SW/AW) Dale Pollard

So sad to hear of Bill's passing. I met Bill through my brother Ricky Scott when he lived in Springfield, Missouri. I was very close to Bill and thought the world of him. I was so honored when he gave me a picture of himself in his Admiral uniform and wrote me the most beautiful inscription. I will treasure it always. He was a great man...I will miss him deeply.

It's a sad day returning from overseas and learning about the Admiral's passing. What an honor to have known him and I cherish the last time we talked when I caught up with him standing by his mailbox at his home. I wanted to thank him again for the management wisdom he brought to the Gator Pro Am Board the year I served as it's Chairman. Saluting you ,sir!

Dear Mrs. Johnston and family. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Johnston. I heard about his passing while I was out shopping for a new car last week. It just so happens that I was at Ocala B.M.W. and purchased the Lincoln MKX that belonged to Mr. Johnston. The Dealership informed me of his passing. He sounded like a wonderful man and I will make sure and take extra care of his car. God bless, Capt. Christopher Liptak (Fort Lauderdale,Florida 954-647-6623)

A Tribute to Admiral Bill Johnston

My greatest regret is that I knew him for only a short period of time, but during that time, I think we really bonded and I proudly call him my friend.

It was extremely hard not to like him. I am sure everyone felt that way. Maybe his most likeable characteristic was his absolute irreverence. He took it to a whole new level, and coming from a military man, it was especially appreciated and unexpected.

He and Betty were a perfect couple. To be able to find each other later in life was a dream come true and I know that was how they felt about it as well.

Bill was a serious competitor and I appreciated that. Whether he was bass fishing or playing golf, he wanted to succeed. He also had an extremely good sense of humor. I remember how impressed I was when he played Bob Hope in a show at Wildcat. Real talent.

Later in life, the after effects of childhood polio, started to take its toll and he hurt.
But he didn't let it get him down. He played as much golf as his body would allow him and that showed me his grit and determination.

Several years ago, I noticed that Bill always went to the golf course, in his golf cart, down that dirt road behind the third green. Having nothing better to do, I made a sign, painted it gold and blue and called it “Admirals Way”. I nailed it to a tree and waited to see if he noticed it when he next came up the road. He noticed it all right and he was so happy to see it. A couple years later, the club paved the road and put a permanent sign up. Fitting that we all have a reminder of a great man.

One doesn't have the privilege of choosing how to die but if I could choose, I would do it Bill's way. I only wish he could have had many more years to enjoy his family, friends, and life in general. He will be missed by all of us.

Shirley and I want to express our sympathy to Betty and all his children on the passing of Bill. He was a true friend and I will miss him greatly. Since we were both born in Chicago in the same year, I wonder if we would have become friends had he grown up there. At least we found friendship later in life.
