Sandi

Saundra Susan Shinaberry, loving wife and mother, 68, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on September 16, 2014 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Sandi was born in Elyria, Ohio on November 30, 1945, to Frank and Susan (Gallo) Metera.

She received her Bachelor's of Education from Bowling Green State University. Sandi taught in the Toledo Catholic Schools for over 40 years. Some of her favorite trips with her husband, Allen, included Europe, California, Las Vegas, and a Mediterranean Cruise. Sandi adored her dogs, 2 basset hounds, Bailey and Brandi, which she walked every day. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She is survived by Allen, her loving husband of 43 years; daughter, Suzette (Chris) Elliott, and son, Sean (Jenna) Shinaberry; grandchildren, Laine, Andie, Noah Shinaberry, Payton and Braden Elliott. Her stepmother, Fran Metera, also survives, along with many dear cousins, nieces and nephews.

So sorry for your loss. Mrs. Shinaberry was one of my all-time favorite teachers at St. Joseph, Maumee. I asked for and received a pair of gogo boots for my birthday in 4th grade because she wore them. I have fond memories of 4th grade because of her.

Mrs. Shinaberry welcomed us as a family when we joined the St. Joan of Arc community. I will always remember her leading the young students in a Halloween parade dressed like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. She had a beautiful gift of relating to and understanding children. She was a true blessing! Jeremy O'Brien, SJA '10, Jake O'Brien, '13, Skyler Montaine, '15.
