I remember back in early 80s/late 70s Sam's son played for Harry D. Young's 18U Senior Knothole baseball summer team. Harry would schedule extra games with area Legion teams like Defiance, Findlay, Sandusky, etc. They would play at Whitmer's baseball field (Rob Rose, Whitmer's head baseball coach then) and to save on umpire money, I would always umpire the plate (Harry would pay me) and Sam would do the bases for free because his son was playing. The visiting team never knew a player's dad was umpiring bases. I did this for 2-3 summers for Harry Young...and Sam would always ump bases---thanx to Sam, Harry saved lots of money when he scheduled those extra games at Whitmer's field. Sam was also sec'try of the Toledo basketball officials association, succeeding Warren Jones, and I reffed basketball.-Jon Everhart [email protected]

I remember when Sam's son played summer baseball for Harry D. Young's 18U team, and Harry scheduled extra games with area Legion teams like Napoleon, Defiance...etc...and to save money [he had to pay both umpires, they played their games at Whitmer's field] he had me umpire home plate every game and Sam would dress up like a base umpire to umpire the bases [free of course, so he could also watch his son play] to save Harry umpire money. Those were 9 inning Legion games! I reffed basketball and he was the sec'y of the basketball officials association.

Reading over Sam's guestbook here, it is obvious how many lives he touched. He was one of those guys that everybody liked. He was genuine, caring, and the world will be a lesser place without him. We will miss that million dollar smile most! Much love and many prayers to the Ciralsky family.

Dear Ciralsky Family:
I am sorry for your loss. Sam was an outstanding basketball offial and an even finer person. It has been one of my life's great treasures to be in his circle of influence. My relationship with your dad and hasband was on several planes: as a fellow official, an Athletic Director, a client and as OHSAA Assistant Commissioner. What a great thing it has been to know him personally and professionally. We will miss him. The photo you shared in his online obituary couldn't have been better. That was Sam. A smile!

My friend Barb Crowner e-mailed me last evening and told me about Sam. Everyone liked Sam! What an unforgettable friend, great smile, tremendous sense of humor, loving father, husband and true friend to so many people. Whenever I would see Sam he always had a wry comment, kidding me about something or making a joke. I used to see Sam at Whitmer High School football games and whenever we got together it was a mini-sports forum, discussing teams, athletes, ballgames. Sam was a special person. I will never forget his love of life. Our condolences, Carole, to you and the entire Ciralsky family. God bless, Sam!

Wonderful memories of the late 70s when your son played for Harry D. Young summer baseball [18-under] and I umpired on the plate with you on bases for Harry's extra "added-on" games that he used to get[nonleague]--he had so much pitching that he had to get extra games but couldn't afford umps. I remember when Sam didn't understand the infield fly rule--I explained it to him...and all those years as secretary of the Toledo Basketball officials Association--with Ron Hanfer!
