Margo,

Tom was the only friend & soldier that I knew who passed during our war on terror. It was a shock when I 1st heard this...as I remember Tom during this Memorial Day weekend, it is as young vibrant Battery commanders at 3-29 FA, when we would share ideas on how to make our formations and battalion better while sitting in my office. He would even send an email asking how things were going for years after. Man, I miss his smile...for even on some of my tough days, he made it that much better.
Take care,

Let There Be Memories

Let there be memories -
fond recollections of special
occasions and everyday things.
Let your heart start on its journey
to healing by feeling the comfort
remembering brings.

Let there be memories -
pictures, mementos, and favorite
stories both funny and sad.
Let your mind wander the paths of
rememberance, reliving the joys and
the good times you've had.

Let there be memories -
signs that our loved ones remain
near in spirit long after they're
gone.....
Tender, surprising, heartwarming and
welcome - sweet proof of the promise
that love will live on.

Each of us is given
Precious time to spend on Earth,
But we know the journey leads us
To a home of greater worth.

Sometimes the Father takes us
Down a path not of our choice,
But when it leads to heaven,
How our hearts and souls rejoice!

And earthly cares all vanish
When at last we hear God say,
"Welcome home, My precious child,
I led you all the way."

Our love and prayers go out to you and your family.

Hopi Prayer
Do not stand
at my grave and weep.
I am not there,
I do not sleep.

I am a thousand
winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints
on snow.

I am the sunlight
on the ripened grain.
I am the gentle
Autumn's rain.

When you awaken
in the morning hush,
I am the swift
uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars
that shine at night.

Do not stand
at my grave and cry:
I am not there,
I did not die.

No one can count on the future or know
what they someday might do.
But could we have chosen the son that
we wanted, the one we'd have picked
would be you.
We'd have wished for your great sense
of humor;
And dreamed of your spirit and style.
We'd have hoped for your love and
affection;
Imagined the joy in your smile.
Life holds some gifts and surprises.
And one of the best there could be
is having a son who's exactly the
one who's already been given to us.

We miss you Tom,and are so grateful for the loving gifts you gave.

To the parents and family, I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I know only too well what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. Holidays make this harder to get through and you will find that celebrating birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day will never be the same. The road isn’t easy that you are about to travel nor are all the books on grief going to map it out for you. It’s ok, just know that we are here for you and will not leave you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief is an individual journey, that unfortunately like my own self you now have to travel. It doesn’t matter how they died but how they lived that we should focus on. We know that each one in our military joined to make a difference in their own lives and to serve their country. Please know that each one no matter what is an American Hero and to be honored always and forever. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to hold your hand as He gives comfort to you today and for the rest of your life. We also have a very active online support group for those who have died while active duty. You are welcome to join us as no one but those who have walked this path can even start to understand that grief.

Having a son means loving
more than you knew
you could love,
laughing harder than you knew
you could laugh.

It means learning when you thought
you were supposed to be
doing the teaching.

It means giving more
than you knew you could give
and receiving so much more in return...

It means feeling more pride
than you ever thought possible
and seeing your hopes fulfilled in ways
you never could have imagined.

It means knowing
that whatever else you did
or didn't do,
you gave the world
something wonderful.

You'll never know the difference
you've made in our lives.
We love you, Son.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Thomas will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms LTC. Thomas Belkofer To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Thomas. And to Thomas it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Thomas, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,353 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Thomas’ family and loved ones.

A soldier is someone who at one point in their life wrote a blank check made out to the United States of America for a price up to and including their lives. This is an honor and there are way too many people in this country who have forgotten that. Our son is Army Special Forces and we cannot say Thank You enough for the service Thomas has given. So as this book continues to grow in the coming days you will find yourself holding onto these compassionate comments from family, friends, and even strangers. All wish, in some special way, to hug each of you and express their sincere condolences. A gesture that is lasting...A committment to provide each of you with some sort of comfort in the coming days. Our prayer for you and your family; that you will find peace in the beauty of your friends and strength in the support of those who are praying for you. At a loss for words to express my feelings and sympathy for your loss. Coming from a great family, Tom was a great man, son, brother, husband, father, and soldier. He gave all he could. I am thankful for his service and am sad for your loss. Know that you all are in my daily prayers and thoughts. Take care of each other. God Bless You and God Bless America

Dear Sharon, Don and Tom's entire family,
I do not have the words to express my deepest sadness for your loss and suffering. Tom's exemplary life reflects the values you instilled in him early on. His life decisions regarding Faith, family, education and career are a gift to you and to his country. It is hard to feel pride when there is so much grief and pain right now. However, pride, faith and courage, along with the love and support of your family, friends and community will carry you through these difficult times. May God Bless You with a peaceful heart and fond memories. Yours, Diane
