GRAENING

LaVada K.

LaVada Kathryn Graening, 97, formerly of Trowbridge and Northwood, died surrounded by her loving family at the Perrysburg home of her daughter and son-in-law, on October 4, 2013. She was born to John and Adelia (Meyer) Blecke on July 3, 1916, in Luckey, Ohio.

LaVada lived her life in service to others. She attended Luckey Elementary School and was valedictorian at Pemberville High School in 1934. She delayed her planned career as a nurse or teacher to help her parents on the family farm and as a care-giver to other neighbors in need. In 1939, she began working as a nurse aide at the Luther Home of Mercy. In 1941 she studied cosmetology at Warner Beauty College, then worked for four years as a beautician in Toledo. She met her husband, Carleton, while working at the Luther Home. They were married June 17, 1945, and together operated the Graening's Grocery and Hardware Store in Trowbridge, Ohio, for 26 years. She returned to the Luther Home and was chosen nurse aide of the year in 1983. After her retirement at age 70, she volunteered at the Home.

LaVada was known for her kind and encouraging letters and notes to family and friends, many drawn from recollections in the journals she kept from the 1930s through the rest of her life. She always had the words and ways to make each member of her family, each child, grandchild and great grandchild know that they were special.

She was an active member and matriarch of St Peter Lutheran Church in Martin (Blackberry), where she was a teacher, pianist, quilter, and member of Sarah Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carleton; brother, Aldon Blecke, and sister, Doris Hansen. She is survived by son, Alan (Cecile) Graening; daughters, Faye (John) Jaeger, LeAnne (Charles) Jaeger; 11 grandchildren, Alex, Craig and Carly Graening (Joe Andenoro), Eve (Rob Kozenko), Lisa (Chris Bernheisel), Theresa and Andrea Jaeger, Sara (Jeff Johnson), David (Becky), Kate (Joe Robitaille), and Sam (Amber) Jaeger; and 17 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory in Genoa, Ohio, from 3-8 p.m., Monday, October 7, 2013. Additional visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 17877 W. St. Rt. 579, Martin (Blackberry), Ohio 43445; the funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Elliston Cemetery, Graytown, with a luncheon to follow in the church's fellowship hall. Donations may be made to St Peter Lutheran Church, Martin, (Blackberry) Ohio, or the Luther Home of Mercy, 5810 N. Main St., P.O. Box 187, Williston, OH 43468;

I have known LaVada since I was 16 years old and we worked together at the Home of Mercy. Most of my life, I have heard stories of you(her family)as you grew up, got married, and had children of your own. She loved each and every one of you very much, was incredibly proud of all that you have done, and could see how wonderful your potential for the future could be. Next to her family, the things dearest to her heart were her church, and the Home of Mercy. LaVada was the epitome of what being a Christian is all about...demonstrating empathy and compassion for others, devoting oneself to service, having a strong spiritual base, and living by example. She has left a wonderful legacy in all of you, and because of that, she will never truly be gone. I know that she is up in heaven smiling down on all of you, and I feel truly blessed to have known her and have the honor of calling her my friend. She has touched my life very deeply, and I will never forget her. She has always been a very special lady, and Heaven is very lucky to have her home.

My deep sympathy to the Graening family. I had the honor of knowing LaVada for over 30 years, joining her nieces Debi and Beth on so many visits over the years. She was the same sweet, compassionate and caring person during all those years, even remaining positive while dealing with health issues. As is already known she had the ability to make people feel very special through her kind written or spoken words. What a strong yet gentle spirit she possessed! She left a wonderful legacy of memories for family and friends and serves as an inspiration for us all.

I've had the good fortune of having a wonderful aunt who always offered kind and encouraging words when our family lived nearby and continued to do so in thoughtful cards and letters throughout the years. Lavada was there to help my mother when her parents passed away at an early age and was a wonderful friend to her throughout her life. Lavada's life is a glorious response to the challenge of "What would Jesus do?". She will be dearly missed but never forgotten . . .

LaVada, your influence in all our lives was such a bonus!! Heaven is lucky to have such a fine person to carry on in her mission for kindness and knowledge. I will never forget how you and Grandpa Aldon used to play the piano and organ together; lifting up everyone's spirits and having such FUN! And your stories of when you 3 were children were such a joy to hear. You raised a wonderful family. Each one of your daughters, son, grandchildren and great grandchildren are special and it was all because of YOU. Leanne, Faye and Alan-know that your mom was one of the very best that lived on Earth and we will miss her immensely! Love all of you. Nancy and Ken
