Joan Devers Obituary

DEVERS Joan (Dempsey) Joan (Dempsey) Devers, 79, of Sylvania Township, passed away Monday, December 25, 2006, at the Kingston Care Center. Joan was born in St. Paul, MN, June 2, 1927, to parents, Paul and Mary (Krismer) Dempsey. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sylvania, Ladies Auxiliary and the Ladies Evening Bridge Group. Joan was a member of the Junior League, the Toledo Yacht Club Auxiliary, and many philanthropic organizations. She is survived by her loving husband of more than 54 years, Vin Devers; sons, Paul (Elise) of Ottawa Hills, OH and their daughters, Brooke, Brandi, and Paige, and Thomas (Barbara) Devers of Sylvania, OH and their children, Ryan, Shane, Haley, and Ceara. Her brothers Paul Dempsey of Mt. Prospect, IL and Jerry Dempsey of New York City, NY preceded Joan in death. Friends may call at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St. Street, Sylvania, OH Thursday, December 28th from 4 - 9 p.m. where Scripture Services will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be conducted at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sylvania, Friday at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. The family would like to thank the staffs of the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and the Kingston Care Center for their loving care. Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider the Multiple Sclerosis Society. How ironic, Joan battled Multiple Sclerosis for more than 50 years, but lost her life to brain cancer in less than 2 months. Her upbeat and positive attitude was an inspiration to everyone she met. We love and will miss you MOM. [email protected]

Dear Tom and Family, My condolences for the lost of your mother. I never had a chance to meet her but the evidence of her beauty, grace, and character is expressed through her children. I lost my mother on Christmas Eve and found out about your lost as I was dealing with my own. As sad and empty as the holiday season is without them...what an impact of what Christmas truly means knowing both of our mothers spent them with Christ this year. Much love and prayers to your family from ours.

Seeing Joan's name in the paper reminded me of an incident almost exactly 40 years ago. I had had my third child with the Rh problem and he needed a blood transfusion. Joan came to Mercy hospital to donate directly for him. Since I worked at Mercy, I was able to find out the name of the donor to send a thank you card. As it turned out, Joan had lived next door to my in-laws when she was younger, on Mayfield Drive, and babysat for my husband.
From reading and hearing what a wonderful woman she was, I hope that some of that wonderfulness is also in my son's blood! Thank you again, Joan, for your gift of life. Our sympathy to your family.

I only new Joan for a couple of years when I met her at Kingston rehab when my mom was there. I got to know her and Vin when they would come into the Mayberry Diner. I so looked forward to talking with them both, to see how Joan was doing and just chatting. She was such a caring person and the last time I was able to have a real conversation with her, she was comforting me with kind words when my mom passed away. My wish for all of you is that time will heal your sorrow, friends ease your pain and all your memories will help you through this trying time.

I will miss Aunt Joan so much. Even though I saw her only once or twice a year, I always looked forward to our time together. She was always so happy and positive, she made every visit fun. She was my inspiration when I was a child and continued to be even when I visited her in the hospital a few weeks ago. Much love and sympathy to Uncle Vin, Tom and Paul.
