Lyman E. Shirley, 84, of Ford City, died Thursday, July 19, 2012, in the VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler. Born Nov. 17, 1927, in Manor Township, he was a son of the late Lawrence C. and Gertrude C. (Klingensmith) Shirley. He was a veteran of the Navy. Prior to his retirement in 1983, he worked as a caster for Eljer Plumbingware, Ford City. Mr. Shirley was a member of Christ, Prince of Peace Church, Ford City, and the Fort Armstrong Wireless Association. He enjoyed gardening and his favorite hobby was being an amateur radio operator. He is survived by his wife, Carmella (Corcetti) Shirley, whom he married May 30, 1951; three sons, Kenneth Shirley, of Ford City, Michael L. (Lori) Shirley, of Chesapeake, Va., and Thomas J. Shirley, of Mesa, Ariz.; and a daughter, Carol Ann (Robert) Weghorst, of Slippery Rock; his grandchildren, Jeremy, Sara, Jennifer and Jessica Shirley, and Kirsten Weghorst; his stepgrandchildren, Kimberly Fiul, Robert Weghorst Jr., and Lynette, Kimberly, and Matthew Schneider; and a sister, Lois McKinley, of Ford City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence C. Shirley Jr. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2012, in the WELCH FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Fourth Ave., Ford City, 724-763-9041. Prayers of transfer will be recited at 1:30 p.m., Monday, in the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Christ, Prince of Peace Church, Ford City, with Father Bryan Summers as celebrant. Interment will be in Ford City Cemetery, Manor Township.
