William Caroselli Obituary

William R. "Bill" Caroselli, Esq., died Thursday, May 17, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Dusty Kirk; adored father of Clay Caroselli (Gretchen), Alyssa Caroselli (Jai Park), David Kirk and Jeannie Kirk; and grandfather of Avery Park. Bill was a proud graduate of Scott High School (1959). Bill earned a scholarship to Brown University, Class of 1963, where he played varsity football. As a lean, fast and fearless athlete but undersized at 160 pounds, the college press touted him as the "smallest interior lineman in the Ivy League." Bill graduated from Brown with a noted reputation as a highly accomplished student-athlete that then led him to Dickinson School of Law, where he earned his J.D. (1966). This became the foundation that launched a distinguished legal career that spanned over five decades. Bill was the founding member of the prestigious law firm, Caroselli, Beachler & Coleman. His leadership and intellectual intensity garnered a reputation as one of the most sought-after legal minds in Pennsylvania and recognized nationally. Mr. Caroselli has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America for over 30 years. He has been one of the Top 50 Super Lawyers in Pittsburgh since 2004, and Pennsylvania Super Lawyers named him as one of Pennsylvania's Top 100 Lawyers. Bill served as president of the Allegheny County Academy of Trial Lawyers and the Pennsylvania Association for Justice. He was chairman of the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Bill impacted the business and cultural community with leadership and vision, serving as chairman of the board of WQED, and the Easter Seals - Western and Central Pennsylvania, and as a distinguished board member of the Pittsburgh Opera. Bill also became a prominent person in Pennsylvania power circles and was noted as one of the most important political figures in the state. Bill's philanthropy has touched and changed thousands of lives, especially his personal commitment to JDRF of Pennsylvania. Bill Caroselli will be missed by his family, friends, the legal, business, cultural and political community for the amazing impact he has had on their lives personally and professionally.
Friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 21, 2018 at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2018, in the chapel of Chatham University.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The William R. Caroselli and Dusty Elias Kirk Scholarship, c/o Penn State's Dickinson Law, 150 S. College St., Carlisle, PA 17013, or Brown Annual Fund, in memory of Bill Caroselli, Class of 1963, and be sent to: Gift Cashier, Brown Annual Fund, Box 1877, Providence, RI 02912.

One of the great trial lawyers and human beings with whom I have ever associated. A mentor to all lawyers. Whose political acumen was unparaled. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather. I was so proud to call Bill my friend. Sincere condolences to Dusty and his family.

Bill was a mentor to many including me. I "grew up" as a lawyer in the firm and will be forever grateful to Bill for giving me my first opportunity out of law school. I admired him, looked up to him, and was very sad when I left the firm - it was in many ways like leaving home. Thank you Bill. My deepest condolences to the family. - Lotta Crabtree

I send my condolences and deepest sympathy to Dusty and the entire Caroselli family. Bill was a giant and a respected leader in the legal profession. He was a powerful voice in the Halls of the State Capitol, always fighting for and protecting the legal rights of workers, consumers, the disabled and injured, and unions. Bill made a profound positive difference in the lives of thousands of people throughout his career. I appreciated his leadership and his friendship. To Dusty and family, please accept my deepest condolences at the loss of Bill. I remember well his great sense of humor from our college days. He was always a joy to be with. I remember well, also, his love of jazz and the game of football and his infectious enthusiasm for that which he loved. It was so sad to think of his brilliant mind and vibrant personality lost in the fog of Alzheimer's disease. Truly, relief from this is a blessing for him and for Dusty. He will live on in our memories, and we will enjoy being with him there.
