Sophie R. Gongo, 92, formerly of Marguerite, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. She was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Marguerite, a daughter of the late John A. and Anna M. (Strella) Ulishney. She was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Marguerite, and its Rosary Altar Society. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Gongo; a daughter, Regina Gongo; four brothers, Michael, Steve, John and Martin Ulishney; three sisters, Veronica Molaznik, Elizabeth Eckenrode and Catherine Urbanowski; and her son-in-law, Donald R. Danser. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth A. Danser, of Humphreys; a son, Joseph J. Gongo and wife, Lauren, of Unity Township; six grandchildren, Donald E. Danser and wife, Theresa, of Latrobe, Regina Marie Simms and husband, Bob, of Ligonier, Cindy D. Conroy and husband, Mike, of Spring Mills, Joseph Gongo, of Lancaster, Shiela Martin and husband, Lonnie, of Lancaster, and Kathy Sears and husband, Lee, of Warrensdale, W.Va.; 11 great-grandchildren, Chris Danser and fiancee, Melissa of Bellefonte, Renee Kimball and husband, Tyler, of Latrobe, Amanda Danser, of Latrobe, Jennifer Creeger and husband, Jeremy, of Lewisburg, Tim Conroy and wife, Danielle, of Arlington, Va., Dawn Arzoumanion and husband, Peter, of Hostetter, Melissa Witchell and husband, J.D., of Manasses, Ga., Kelly Sears, of Wardenville, W.Va., Nick Martin, of East Earl, Melonie Gongo, of Phoenixville, and Haley Gongo, of Kirkwood; three sisters, Agnes Spewock and husband, Ted, of Latrobe, Helen Stepanic, of Latrobe, and Margaret Quinn, of Hostetter; a special sister-in-law, Theada Ulishney, of Greensburg; a brother-in-law, Dave Eckenrode, of Latrobe; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 2072 Route 130, Pleasant Unity. Prayers will be held at 9:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Benedict Catholic Church, Marguerite, with the Rev. Martin R. Bartel, OSB, as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Florian Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Township. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Westmoreland Manor for their wonderful care.
