Richard H. Grindle

Richard "Dick" H. Grindle, 89, of Sardis, died on Aug. 15, 2017, in Indiana, Pa. at the Communities of Indian Haven Assisted Living Facility, having resided there since 2013. He was born June 24, 1928, in Connellsville, Pa. Richard was one of six sons of Archie and Edith Andersen Grindle, of Connellsville. Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Josephine "Joanne" Margaret Fearer Grindle, in 2000; his youngest son, James A. Grindle, in 1986; and his five brothers. Richard is survived by three sons, Ronald (Kate) Grindle, of Beaufort, S.C, Gary (Lynn) Grindle, of Indiana, Pa. and Jerry (Sherry) Grindle, of Highland Heights, Ohio; six grandchildren, Erin Bauer, Sarah Staub, Sean Grindle, Ryan Grindle, Cody Grindle and Marisa Grindle; and three great grandchildren, Margaret Staub and Alex and Madelyn Bauer. He was a 1945 graduate of Connellsville. He served two years in the Navy before returning home and marrying Joanne in 1949. They moved to Sardis in 1950, where he found employment as a lineman with the West Penn Power Company, eventually retiring in 1990 as a line foreman after 40 years of faithful service. Richard was involved in various community activities. He was a volunteer fireman for the Sardis VFD, and helped build the original firehouse and Sardis Community Park. He was an avid bowler and loved to play church softball. He was a coach for the Sardis Little League, and a mentor for the Junior Business League. He belonged to the Lions Club and the Forbes Trail Masonic Lodge no. 783.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, at the HART FUNERAL HOME INC., Murrysville, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday. Interment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
