Glenn McBride Obituary

Glenn G. McBride, M.D. Glenn G. McBride, born in Vancouver, B.C. August 5, 1913, died on March 21, 2011. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret R. McBride, and is survived by three wonderful daughters and sons-in-law: Betsy and Jack Sonntag, Barbara and Jack Williamson, and Molly and James Taylor. In addition, ten beloved grandchildren and their spouses: Susie (Bob) Crosby, John (Karin) Williamson, Anne (Dean) Curry, Amy (Mike) Benoit, Marybeth (Jim) Cook, Greg (Jada) Taylor, Brian (Jennifer) Taylor, Scott (Kasha) Sonntag, Laurie (Dan) Legard, Marc Taylor, and 24 great grandchildren. Dr. McBride graduated from the University of Washington in 1935, and Northwestern University Medical School in 1939. After their marriage in Chicago IL, Margaret and Glenn returned to Seattle where he interned at Swedish Hospital. In 1940, they moved to Tacoma for a residency at the Pierce County Hospital. In Tacoma, Dr. McBride thoroughly enjoyed his medical practice, and was "on call" for thirty-nine years. He was a member of the Pierce County, Washington State, and American Medical Associations, as well as the American Academy of Family Practice. He served as President of the Pierce County Medical Society, the Pierce County Medical Bureau, Tacoma General, and Doctors Hospitals. He was a board member of the Franke Tobey Jones and Commencement Terrace retirement homes. He was a life member of the Elks Club. During WWII, he was a medical officer in the United States Army Air Force form 1942 to 1946, and was a major at the time of discharge. In 1963, he was ordained as an elder in the Presbyterian Church where he served actively for many years. In addition, he and Margaret were on the Young Life Council. He deeply appreciated the privilege of delivering several thousand babies, as well as the opportunity of watching many of them grow to adulthood. Our Dad had many interests. In his free time he enjoyed walking, photography, tennis, and gardening. He wrote three books of memories and thousands of limericks. Daddy and Mother loved spending time at the beach place at Rosedale and traveling to Naplili Kai Resort on Maui. His last years were spent at Franke Tobey Jones and the family would like to thank the staff for their loving care. Our Dad will be remembered for his optimistic outlook, keen sense of humor, kindness to others, deep faith in Jesus Christ, and love of family. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Tacoma on Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m. Remembrances can be made to First Presbyterian Church, Young Life, World Vision, or Franke Tobey Jones. I knew Dr. McBride and Mrs. McBride through First Presbyterian in Tacoma. He was a very kind man and bold in his faith! He was an encouragement to me and others! Praise God that we know he is at home with the Lord!

Barbara - My brother peruses the Trib's obits and found your dad's notice so sent it on to me. I'm Linda (Breithaupt) Casey (Geiger School). From the entries it looks like they're a lot of good memories of your dad and it's these memories that help sustain you and your sisters at this time. My sympathy to all of you.

Dr. McBride was the doctor who delivered me, with my mom's help of course in 1947. He continued to be my childhood doc as well. It's not an exaggeration to say he's the reason I'm here. My mom years later would point with pride as we drove past Dr. McBride's home on 72d Street. Now after 64 years, I still know what house was his. God's peace. Thanks, Dr. McBride.

My feelings for Dr. Glenn McBride echo those of many other patients. He delivered my sister and brother then both my children and we were patients until he retired, too soon for me.

He always had time to talk to me about books and often had one to recommend. We shared the miseries of migraines and exchanged stories. My kids loved him and I missed him greatly when he retired. I also had trouble finding a replacement and never have met a doctor with his compassion and caring.

I was privileged to have a copy of the autobiography he wrote, in the 80's I believe. I enjoyed reading of his life.

He was one of a kind.

Dr. Glenn McBride delivered me into this world on April 17, 1960 (Easter Sunday) at Tacoma General Hospital. He was an outstanding doctor and a very caring person. He always made his patients feel very comfortable and had great advice. My mother even named me after him.
Thanks for the care and memories......Steven Glenn Christin

What a great loss to so many people. He delivered four dear babies
for us. He took care of our whole family and we have many loving, stories and some funny ones to remember him by. He never made
fun of me when we took a child to him in an emergency to find it was
just a worried parent. Our love and sympathy to you all. The Peters Family

Dr. McBride was our family doctor starting in the 1940's, caring for my parents, my three sisters and myself. He always held a special place in our hearts. He was an exceptional doctor and a wise counselor. He spoke often of his three daughters, and we felt like we knew them. I remember when he removed my appendix at the old Doctors Hospital when I was eight years old, 56 years ago. Dr. McBride was truly an inspiration and a wonderful human being.

Dear Glenn McBride's Family,
On March 21, 2011 the world lost one of the truly good ones. That was our good Dr. Glenn McBride. All that is good and right in this world was brought about by people like him who seek God's grace.
Starting in 1956 till his retirement he was our family's doctor, caring for my husband, myself and 8 children, through 7 pregnancies and childbirths, operations and grown-up and childhood illnesses and afflictions.
We knew he was always there for us through those years, giving wise counsel, medicine when needed and a smile of encouragement.
He was one of a kind. After Dr. McBride retired it took us some time to find another family doctor to replace him. But Dr. McBride was a very hard act to follow. We couldn't help but compare all other doctors to our Dr. McBride. I'm sure that was true for thousands of his former patients.
Now we offer our sympathy to you, his family. All of us, whose lives he touched as our family's doctor, think of him as part of our own family too.
We join you in mourning his loss.

Dr. McBride was our family physician way back in 1946 and delivered three of my four children. Always on a one to one basis, never will be another one like him. I still have the letter that was mailed about his retirement in an album, and his recommendation as his replacement. Had difficulties in going to his replacement, kept looking around and finally since working in Nursing Division now retired 30 years went to the Assistant Director of Health who went in private practice as our family physician. My children really looked forward to their office visits to see him, He often spoke of his three little girls, Barbara, Betsy, and Molly which related why my children were given immunizations and they felt "we get the same shots as Dr. McBride's little girls. They looked forward to going back again. I regret I have no picture to put in their genealogical family book.

Blessings to you in the loss of such a wonderful father, and such a great physician to my family.

Dr. McBride was known as the nurses doctor when I was a student nurse and for many years after graduating from TGH. He delivered two of my three children and saw them through many childhood illnesses. A gentle giant.

As I read the morning paper and seeing that Dr MCBRIDE has passed on, memories floated back in my mind. He was our family Dr for ages. Growing up as his patient, I remember having my tonsils out at the old Drs hospital. I would not let them put me under till I saw him. He was wonderful to my family and we loved him so. My parents and a sister has passed on now and I am 58 yrs old and married to a man in the medical field and we have a son in the military studying to be a DR. To this day I still value the advice Dr MCBRIDE gave me way back then and have told many of my own Drs about him. He never led us wrong. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Always loved going to see him. May your family know the love and comfort and peace he is felling now for his way he treated everyone. Blessings to you all.
