MARY MCDONALD Obituary

Mary (Marie) McDonald Died Jan 14th, 2012 at 102 years of age. Born Dec. 31 1909 in Ruston, her father rowed her and her mother home in the boat to Sunrise Beach in Gig Harbor. Lifting mother and baby out of the boat, he dropped them both in the water. Mary was fond of telling this story. She was proud to be a lifelong resident of Gig Harbor. Her parents, Sievert and Mathilda Garness homesteaded at Sunrise Beach in 1901. Norwegian immigrants, they farmed and her father commercial fished. The children walked to school in Crescent valley. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, and especially fishing She was employed by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard starting work there during WWII. She is predeceased by her husband, Roy L. (Mac) McDonald, parents, Sievert and Mathilda Garness, brothers, Albert and Selmer Garness and sisters,Carrie Garness and Laura Sauness, and nephew, Roland (Sonny) Smythe. She is survived by her niece, Corinne Bauer, grandnieces, Lynn and Mary Bauer, all of Portland, Or., grandnieces, Sheila Crosby of Gig Harbor and Lorraine Wilson of Auburn and grandnephew, Steven Barkhoff of Gig Harbor. She was a sweet, loving aunt, and we will miss her. The family would like to thank Soundview Gardens adult family home for their wonderful care of our aunt. At her request there will be no services.
