MILDRED BROUSSARD Obituary

Mildred V. Broussard 6/29/1911 - 3/18/2011 Born and raised on a farm in Chester, MN. Trained to become an RN at Minnesota State and Cook County Hospitals. Met husband Joseph while in Chicago, IL and married 9/19/1933. The family relocated to Tacoma, WA in 1943. Mildred continued with her nursing career at Tacoma General Hospital for the next 29 years, retiring as Head Nurse of a surgical wing. She was a kind and compassionate person and was loved by all her staff and patients. Mildred was well-known for her love of cooking, but she particularly enjoyed sharing her home-made bread and rolls with others. Joseph and Mildred had a love of gardening - flowers as well as produce. They continued sharing their abundance after moving to Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates in 1983, where they had a garden plot. While in her 80's, Mildred found a new passion of growing, drying, and pressing flowers and making greeting cards. For a number of years she sold her cards at the Northwest Store in the Proctor District. The family thanks Sandy Columbini and Robert Evans for giving her this opportunity. Due to macular degeneration, Mildred became blind the last ten years of her life. Despite multiple chronic medical problems, she was never one to complain. Her mind remained sharp until the end, and she looked forward to talking with people and being read to. She is survived by her son Medrick (Judy), daughter Janet Haskin (Bruce), five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank her friends Lee Fisher, Nancy G. Locke, Debbie Buttorff, Judy Gaffney,EPauline Lewis, Dolly Skeen, and Pat Wollenburg. Special thanks to Dr. James Fry, Dr. Clark Deem, Franciscan Hospice, and all the staff at Franke Tobey Jones, particularly the Health Care Center where she resided for the last 7 years. Private graveside services will be held. Remembrances may be made to Franke Tobey Jones Charitable Subsidy or Health Care Center.

As a student nurse at TGH many years ago, I did my charge nurse training under Mrs. Broussard. She was a delightful, dedicated, and capable head nurse who made such a difference in patient care.

I remember Mildred Broussard well! I was a student nurse and later graduated with class of 1959 at Tacoma General when she was head nurse on Ward A (either that or Ward B). But my husband Carl and I were also great friends with Medrick at First Presbyterian Church in Tacoma. Carl passed away in January, 2003. My prayer is for God to give you all comfort as only He can do.
