Nancy Elizabeth Griggs Daugherty

Nancy Daugherty Obituary

Nancy Elizabeth Griggs Daugherty Nancy Elizabeth Griggs was born in Tacoma on May 29, 1927, the middle child of Mary Lea and Everett (Spike) Griggs. She died peacefully at her home in Puyallup on Sunday, April 17, 2011. Nancy grew up in Tacoma, attending AWS, WSC and business school. She met Lt. William Daugherty in the late 1940's and married him in 1950; this started 16 years of nomadic military life, first in Greece, then Germany, various US stations, and finally England. The family returned to Tacoma for good in 1966. She loved horses (especially if they were changing leads or following a pack of hounds), intelligent conversation, cooking, new-fangled gadgets, painting, and was a voracious reader. Nancy was preceded in death by her brother Everett Griggs, and sister Mary Morgan. She is survived by her sons Bill and Bob, their respective wives Connie and Lynn, and three granddaughters, Elizabeth, Molly and Alison. The families would especially like to thank caregivers Laurie Wilson, Judi Brankline, Renae Alderman, Amber Burnside, Raelene Ford, and the Good Samaritan Hospice nurses for the loving comfort and companionship they provided Nancy in her last few years.

Tally Ho! Nancy would shriek with delite, raising a glass of warm liquer in salute with one hand- and holding one of her crazy hats onto her head with the other, as our horses and hounds roared off across her Tahoma fields in search of the imaginary fox.

Nancy was a great friend to me and other awkward teenage girls in love with their horses. She taught poise and manners, to the girls and the horses.

My family is also very lucky Nancy
taught me to cook. We spent mnay hours in her kitchen experimenting with home made syrup and phillo dough to make the flaky buttery Greek Baklava. When we had our fill of the wonderful dessert- wwe bet each other a nickel a race on the Atari "horse races".

For a real treat and an excuse to get dressed up - we would go to Longacres and watch the real ponies race for $2 a bet.

Dear Nancy, all of those 4-H'ers and pony clubbers who are "young" grandmothers now like me- will ride with perfection someday with you. Select some good bloodstock for us. God Bless you Nancy.

Dear Family of Nancy Daugherty,
I had so many wonderful memories of riding at Nancy's wonderful Tahoma farm duing the mid 70's She was very kind to share her beautiful trails and riding tips with the local 4-H group. Many of us would trailer out to her farm for riding lessons or just to enjoy a trail ride. Even after almost forty years I can still hear her say "get your heels down" when my legs were not in the proper position when riding.
I'm sure she touched many lives.

Dear Bill and Bob:
Your Mom was one of the early pioneers of Tahoma Audubon. She pushed environmental education, understanding forests, and great social gatherings.
I enjoyed visiting with her and one year she and I labeled the plants in the Native Plant Garden at Point Defiance.
She always supported my Birdathon.
Savor your memories and pass along her legacy to the next generations.
I think of you often.
Helen Engle, still working for wildlife and special places.
