Robert Fitzsimmons Obituary

Robert Scott Fitzsimmons Scott was born May 29, 1960 in Sacramento, CA to parents Bob and Jo Fitzsimmons. He passed away following a courageous battle with cancer on April 25, 2011 in San Francisco, CA. Scott graduated from Lakes High School in 1978 in Tacoma, then joined Delta Chi Fraternity at the University of Washington in the fall. Thus started his love of the City of Seattle, where he lived and worked for many years. Perhaps growing up in an Air Force family started his love of travel. He worked in the travel industry, starting out as a tour leader for Johansen Royal Tours and moving on to Princess Cruises, Society Expeditions, Holland America, then to advertising with Elgin Syferd. Scott's reputation later earned him a wonderful opportunity to join Zegrahm Expeditions' senior management for 13 years, serving as company president for much of that time. Scott was able to venture out on several fascinating journeys over the years. When asked for a recent newsletter article what his favorite memories were during his tenure at Zegrahm, here is what he had to say: "Leading travelers on the 'Russian Trifecta' was one of my personal highlights: submersible dives to the Titanic, a nuclear-powered icebreaker voyage to the North Pole, cosmonaut training in Star City-all on Russian equipment. Plus, scouting trips to Algeria, Libya, Central America, and the South Pacific, and heading up Zegrahm's Space and Deep Sea Voyages divisions, made for a 'charmed life' at Zegrahm." Scott also had a love affair with sports, from Seahawks football and Mariners baseball to backyard wiffleball. He could make a game or competition out of anything at the drop of a hat - much to the delight of family, friends and co-workers. Though sports and travel were highlights of his life, the highlight of his love was family. Scott is survived by parents Jo and Bob Fitzsimmons, sisters Nancy Edwards (Jeff) and Kathy Moorhead (Ron), and brother Mark Fitzsimmons (Annie); all of Tacoma. It was hard to know Scott without hearing about his much adored nieces and nephews, John Moorhead, Tyler and Kelly Edwards, and Griffin and Hannah Fitzsimmons. Scott's recent enchantment with San Francisco was shared with fiancée Patty Ponciano. A celebration of Scott's life is scheduled for Noon on May 22, 2011 at the Fircrest Golf Club. I was shocked today to see this SO many years (13) later. Scott was a colleague at Holland America Line. He was kind and always helpful to me in my role as the assistant to the director in the public relations department. I'm sad to see that he passed away so young. He seemed to have a special energy and "zest" for life, was never to busy to help.

Scott and I went to Lakes High school and played football there together. Today in the game played with behemoths, we both weighed in at about 170 pounds but he performed like a much bigger athlete. He had a tremendous heart and desire to win and his sense of humor on the sidelines and in class always kept me laughing. His comedy performances in front of the student body with Matt Highsmith are legendary. Although I last saw Scott at our 10 year High School Reunion, I enjoyed following his remarkable travel adventures through his biographies on his company websites. He will be sorely missed by all.

Scott pledged Delta Chi as a freshman when I was a senior. He was gregarious, funny, and well loved by all. We shot pickup basketball together on the pool deck and cheered the Sonics' championship in June 1979. I regret losing touch with him since then. I am so sorry for your loss but hope you will be consoled by knowing that your son was a great guy.
