Ann Peyton Young Gregory ST. PAUL, Va. Ann Peyton Young Gregory, 77, passed away Sunday morning, April 7, 2013, at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, Tenn., after a courageous battle with cancer with her family by her side. She was born in Lexington, Ky.; daughter of the late David M. and Pauline Adams Young. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Peyton Gregory on March 8, 2013. She attended elementary school in Lexington before moving with her parents to Paintsville, Ky., where she would finish school, leaving after her junior year to attend the University of Kentucky where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority in 1952. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in May 1956, with a degree in Radio and Television from the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Kentucky. Upon graduation, she accepted the position of traffic manager at WVLK Radio in Lexington, Kentucky until Sept. 1961. She was married to Allen Gregory on Jan. 29, 1957, and in Oct. of 1961, they moved to St. Paul, Va. She wrote from home for the Clinch Valley Times for a few years before accepting a position with the Children's Television Workshop as administrative assistant from 1970-1974. In 1974, with her husband, Allen; and her mother, Pauline Young; they purchased the Clinch Valley Times newspaper, where she was editor until her passing. As well as newspaper editor she taught adult education (GED) classes for a few years. She was a member of the St. Paul Junior Women's Club, a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years, and a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Women. In 1975, she was appointed to the Wise County School Board where she served for 30 years until 2005. While on the board she served as Vice Chairman for 13 years and chairman for 1 term. During her tenure on the Wise County School Board she served on the Virginia School Boards Association, where she was Secretary, Vice President, and President. Also serving on the Virginia Vocational Technical Education Council and was a member of the Appalachia Educational Council. She served on the Virginia High School League's Board and the Rules Committee. She was a member of the St. Paul Tomorrow Board, the Clinch River Days Festival committee, and the Thursday night Book group. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma honorary fraternity. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Allen Gregory; and son, David Young Gregory of St. Paul; and many close friends. Funeral services for Ann Peyton Young Gregory will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in St. Paul United Methodist Church, St. Paul with the Rev. Harry Layell officiating. Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013, in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Va. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home and go in procession to the cemetery leaving at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Monty Salyers, Bob Harrison, Bill Robinson, Jay Zeigler, Blake Whitenack, Aubrey Ward, Chub Crowder, and Dr. Dick Davidson. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in St. Paul United Methodist Church, St. Paul. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, TN 37620; St. Paul United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 656, St. Paul, VA 24283; and David M. Young Memorial Scholarship, UVA at Wise, 1 College Avenue, Wise, VA 24293.
