Allen H. Whitley MARION, Va. Allen H. Whitley, age 88, died Saturday, Oct. 09, 2010, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va. Mr. Whitley was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict having served in the United States Army. He was injured in the Battle of the Bulge and received a purple heart. He was involved in the invasion of Normandy France at Omaha Beach. Mr. Whitley and three partners started the first assisted living home in Smyth County. He went on to establish an assisted living facility in Abingdon, Va. He retired as a general contractor after 50 years. Mr. Whitley is survived by his wife, Dorothy C. Whitley of Marion, Va.; one son, George A. Whitley of Abingdon, Va.; one sister, Mary E. Harper of Rich Valley, Va.; one grandson, Matthew A. Whitley; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Reverend Robert Russell and Reverend Neville Mozingo officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 p.m. until the time of the service at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday at Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va., where military rites will be conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post No. 4667.
