I am so sorry to hear about Bob's passing. I only found out about it today and that is why my condolences are late. You have my sincere sympathy. I would have been there if I had known. My prayers are with you and your family at this time.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort. Dr. Raines gave me a chance to teach Social Studies at John S. Battle High School in the school year of 1966-67. I continued to appreciate his friendship and leadership in his various roles as an educational leader.

Dr. B. G. Raines was a true gentleman and extraordinary educator, whose impact on students in Southwest Virginia will be felt for many years to come as all of the teachers he trained over the years at Emory & Henry and UVa-Wise continue to follow his outstanding example. Bob could have served anywhere, but chose to stay in his native Southwest Virginia and improve education at home. As one of his former students at E&H, his contributions will not be forgotten.

Bob and Shirley were good friends when we all taught at Abingdon High school and for years after that. We lost contact a long time ago, but I always thought of him. I mourn his passing. He was a good friend.

Dr. Raines' passing is bittersweet. He was my advisor at Emory and Henry College, and he was always encouraging me to "get the job done." After graduating, I was assigned to Watauga Elementary under the direction of his wife Juanita. It was an honor to work for them both. I will alway appreciate his guidance and advice, his way making you do your best, and his ability to work with people who loved what he did--teach. Our prayers are with you.
