Dink was the greatest friend anyone could ask for. Miss his laughter and all just seeing his smiling face. Prayers for all his family and loved ones during this season of love and hope...a time when we miss our loved ones the most.

Dear Family,
Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you daily. My heart has been so heavy with the loss of Dennis and Phil's illness. I hope Phil is doing well. I think often of the great times on the shore that we all got to share. My God comfort you all. Dennis is in heaven having a great time messing with all the family. Can you just hear all the laughter going on up there? I love you all so much. Take care of yourselves and each other. Hope to get together to remember all of our loved ones.

I'm so sorry & please know my thoughts & prayers are with you & your family. May the many memories you have give you comfort. God Bless.

Charles, Phil, Todd and Mary--
Losing Dennis leaves a new gaping hole in the cosmic fabric. We hope that your many fond memories can soften this terrible loss.
On Christmas Eve we Smolinskis recounted many happy childhood memories at Nana and Poppie's with the Grinders. We raised a glass to Dennis and then to the rest of you.
We look forward to a summer get-together -- a celebration of those who can't be with us -- and those who are. Until then, Bill and I send our deepest condolences.

Big guys or little guys, it didn't matter who you were--Coach Grindstaff always had a smile or a kind word. He would often give my kindergartners high-fives or make some comment to pick at them (or me) to brighten the day if we passed him in the hall. There will be an empty place in our shared K-12 halls at Bland School, as well as in our hearts.

I was so sad to hear about Dennis. He was a special person and touched so many lives. I was an assistant principal at THS when Dennis taught there. He never failed to provide a big smile and some joke to start my day and was always supportive of the "new kid on the block". May God provide you comfort and find joy in celebrating Dennis's life and know how he touched so many people.

Bland High will not be the same without Dennis Grindstaff. In any situation, he always kept smiling and could make everyone laugh. I always knew I could count on him if I needed anything. I feel very lucky to have known him and will never forget him. He was a dear friend to me and losing him so suddenly breaks my heart. My prayers are with the Grindstaff family. God bless.

Charles, Phil and Todd -
I simply could not believe the heartbreaking news that Dennis (Dinky, as I knew him) was taken from our selfish wants of his gift of a better day he blessed us with - simply by a short conversation - that always produced a smile and his contagious laugh! I can NEVER remember having a BAD day if I was lucky enough to simply run into him for a moment. While leaving an empty spot in my heart he is certainly filling the hearts of all that surround him now. Merry Christmas Dennis, I will miss
you.

I was a student of Mr. Grindstaff, oh what a great man he was no matter how bad a day i was having he always seemed to make it better in some way. And on those days that we didn't want to do anything he always found a crazy story either about his childhood or family or something he just made up, but no matter what the story believe me you were gonna laugh. He was such a wonderful man, a few months ago my cousin had the swine flu and Mr. Grindstaff not even knowing him had his class send him get well cards. It breaks me heart that this great man is gone, he will be truely missed. My sympathy to his family, close friends, and anyone he just happened touch in anyway.

To My Cousins
I do not have words to help you I will only suggest you celebrate his life as he live it with gusto. Dinkus was the last of a rare breed of individualist who brought joy and happiness into all endeavors. No matter how you cut it he was always up for the game, weather spreading a little bovine scatology or giving you advice on a life experience he was one of the best; not a bad fisherman either. I will miss him sorely -

To Phil and all the Grindstaff family, I hadn't gotten a paper for a few days due to the weather and just found out to late to attend services about this terrible tragedy. I will always remember Dennis for his great personality and love of life and sports in general. I'll never forget the times we have shared playing softball, baseball and just talking about the games. He will be greatly missed and I am sure the MAN upstairs will have a place for him on HIS team. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during these trying times.

Coach G was my mentor teacher when we were at Big Creek. He always had great stories and a good personality. He always made me laugh when he would tell the kids if they wouldnt act right, he would "give them 10 lashes on the naked eye with a wet noodle." He will be sorely missed.

Coach G,
Words cannot express how deeply saddened I am. You were like a father to me for so many years. If you had never asked me to come wrestle for you my 9th grade year, I wouldn’t be where I am today. You made me a better person by always wanting to do good things. I will never forget all the things you’ve done for me throughout the time I had the pleasure of knowing you. You touched so many young people’s lives, that we can never all truly tell you what you have meant to each and every one of us. You will be sadly missed but always remembered for your kind spirit, gentle heart, and good things you always had to say about people. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me to become who I am today.
To the Rest of the Grindstaff family,
I am very sorry for your loss. Words can never express what Coach G meant to me, but I’m sure most of you already know that.

For almost 30 years I have been fortunate to share a deep brotherhood with the Grindstaff family through my friendship with Todd ......and Dennis was a bright star of energy within it. His excitement was contagious and there was ALWAYS laughter when you were around Dennis!
He shared his gift of coaching in many sports with many schools but the best coaching I learned from him was how to enjoy the time we have together.
No matter how big or small the group, bright or dark the day...we always laughed. Todd, thanks for the good times with your brother....and I know he has brightened heaven a bit already. Love you guys.....Randall Light & Family

To the family of Coach Dennis,
I pray that God will give you a spirit of peace and comfort as we all mourn the loss of Coach Dennis. I am very proud to say that he was my coach and my friend. His and Phil's first year coaching wrestling at THS was my first year wrestling. It fastly became (and still is) my favorite sport. They pushed me to be the very best that I could be, and I thank both of them it. They reminded me that a kid from Bishop could do anything that he put his mind to, and to never give up. The last time I had the priviledge to talk with Dennis was at the 2008-09 football game when Narrows played at Bland Co. My son was a senior linebacker at NHS and after the game, Dennis told me what a fine young man and athelete my son was. Of course, then we talked about wrestling and how we could get it back into NHS and into BCHS. I will truly miss him.

I feel so bad, Coach G was one of the funniest, life filled, inspiring men i've ever met. I played football for him over the course of two years. He inspired me to be great. He got me ready for every game, every practice, and every day.His words "if u can't get up for this, u aint pumpin blood" still go through my mind. They inspire me to be great. I was fortunate to meet Dennis right after he came to teach and coach in Bland County. He and I hit it off right from the start and shared many of the same interests, especially in sports and music. It was always a pleasure for me to be around him and I considered him to be one of my best friends. Words can not express nor fill the void that will be felt on the football sidelines or in the locker room for many years to come. May God be with the entire Grindstaff family at this very difficult time. Put your burdens in His hands and He shall help ease your pain. I would like to come to Tazewell on Tuesday to meet his family but work obligations will not permit. So I'll just end by saying goodbye Dennis. We in Bear-ville love you man.

To the Grindstaff family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time of grief. The faculty at Bland High School has lost one of the friendliest, funniest, and most caring members of its staff. It is hard to believe that I had my last hallway chat with Mr. Grindstaff on Friday. He was a blast to talk to. He never left me without a chuckle. He truly cared about the students and their families at BHS. Returning to the memory filled hallways of BHS will be difficult, no doubt. Comfort may come knowing that Mr. Grindstaff is safely walking the hallways of Heaven.

My name is Bruce Pitzer, (Husband to Brandy Pitzer/Heflin and next door neighbor of Dennis and Phil). I know my Wife has already spoken our condolences, but I wouldn't feel complete not SPEAKING my thoughts of a "Fine-Man"!! As for me, I only knew Dennis about a year. In this short-time, Dennis and I kicked it off like we had known each other for years. We liked a lot of the same hobbies and shared many of the same thoughts and ideas. In today's world it is hard to believe in people or trust anyone, but Dennis took me in like one of his own, as did his brother Phil!! I'm not MAD at GOD, but we did however have a little talk in WHY he took an "ANGEL" from Earth?? No, I will never have the answer or will I ever understand, but I do know he is SADLY MISSED. I never met his other brothers or sister, but man ol' man did he LOVE YOU!! Now, as for Carrie and Cary, I again do not know either of you, but as much as he spoke of you two, I know in my heart that you both couldn't have made anyone any PROUDER than Dennis. He thought the World of you both, and I think you have the right to know how much he spoke of the two of you!! I didn't get to go fishing as planned with Dennis or Phil, but so you all know, I will carry Dennis w/ me in mind on every backwoods trout stream adventure as if he were there. Also, I will bother phil till he takes me (HA-HA). Well, I could go on and on about the GOODNESS of Dennis, but in respect I will end here. He may be gone, but he will never be Forgotten---I LOVE YA DENNIS and as I always told him, "Your a fine man,Pal!! --Wanna Beer? " God Bless You Family and Scamp-Scamp!!

Dear Carrie.
Words can never express the sympathy I share with you. Your dad was a great man. I remember when we were little and attending NTE how he would take us over to your grandmothers house early before school so he & your mom could go to work. As the years passed, he coached my brother and son in football - they both adored him as well. If I can do anything for you please do not hesitate to contact me.
Many prayers to you... God Bless.

To all the Grinders,
Dennis was a great part of my life growing up. I remember his love of life, and the way he always protected the younger kids at NaNa's. He used to carry the basket with all the crabs we had caught off that little bridge to Greenbackville, and when we were older playing in the pool at Wallops was always a treat when he was there. As we grew older he would make any get together a better celebration. It is so hard to believe he is gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Luckily I got to know Dennis as a young girl when my dad and uncles particpated in softball- he was always very nice to me and all my sisters and brother. Recently I was lucky enough to get to meet him again as an adult when he became my neighbor and nothing had changed with Dennis except he was even sweeter than I remembered. For a very short time we were lucky enough to see him, his big smile and doggie skamper on a daily basis. He will be remembered with fond memories but also sadness for a life cut short. My families thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this very sad time. Brandy Heflin Pitzer, Bruce Pitzer and Bob Heflin

Dennis was one of the most "alive" people I ever met. He was always smiling and loved a good funny story. His love for the outdoors made him one with nature. Remember him that way.We all will miss him. His leaving us will leave a hole in our hearts. Dear Family,I send to you my deepest heart felt sympathy and my prayers. Via con Dios my friend.

Mr. Grindstaff will never be forgotten, he'll always be in the hearts of all of us students of Bland High School. He was one of our favorite teachers or at least mine. Mr.Grindstaff always had a joke and a smile and would always be able to brighten your day. He probably didn't know how much we cared about him. He will be greatly missed. But I know he's in a better place.

Coach Grindstaff will be missed by many, including the faculty and students at Bland High School, and the Bland County Bears Football Team and coaching staff. Our son, who was a student of his, as well as a member of the BCB Football Team, thought so much of him and has said that it will just not be the same without him. He always had stories and jokes to tell us that Coach Grindstaff would tell them. Our prayers are with the family, the students and faculty at BHS, as well as the football team and coaching staff. To the Family of Coach Grindstaff,
Recently our family suffered a terrible loss. Coach was there to offer his love and support to my son Matthew. He never forgot his former football players and treated them with the utmost respect. We in Bland County were very lucky to get him. I enjoyed watching him with his players for the last few years and he made football fun. He fell into the one of a kind mode and is someone I hold with the greatest respect.
Our hearts and prayers are with you,
Leah, Matthew and Kellie Morris
