Fred Elmo Newton APPALACHIA, Va. Fred Elmo Newton, 92, passed away Nov. 2, 2009, at the home of his son. He was born on Feb. 4, 1917, to A.L. "Popeye" and Ida Newton. Fred was a lifelong resident of Inman and Appalachia. He served in the U.S. Army for six years, four of which he fought in World War II. Fred took part in the D-Day Invasion and remained in Europe until after the war ended. He was part of the invasion force that marched into France, Belgium and Germany and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Fred was a retired employee of Central Supply Company of Andover, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers and sisters, Clyde Newton, Arthur Newton, Dorothy Newton, Lucille Lovell, Mary Hall, Lorene Johnson and Nell Long. Fred is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue Thompson Newton of Appalachia; son, James "Tom" Newton and wife Betty of Wise, Va.; granddaughter, Brett Newton; sister, Pauline Newton of Wise, Va.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Nick Brewer officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday before services. Military graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the American Legion Cemetery conducted by Local VFW and DAV members and Army National Guards Honors team. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery. `Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, is in charge of arrangements.
