Gay Atwell Crabtree Gay Atwell Crabtree, 82, originally of Abingdon, Va., passed away on April 25, 2010, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington, N.C. Gay was born in Abingdon and lived the majority of her life in Petersburg, Va., prior to moving to Sunset Beach, N.C., to be near her daughter. Gay was the consummate homemaker, who loved to cook and share her meals with her family and neighborhood friends. She was a devoted mother and best friend to her daughter, Lisa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Scott and Minnie Atwell; two brothers, Raymond and Carl; one nephew, Blane Atwell; and her beloved dog, Bianco. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Crabtree Sanderson; her son-in-law, Jeff Sanderson; a sister, Edith Grubb; a brother, James "Jack" Atwell; three nephews, Larry Grubb, Frank and John Atwell; one niece, Angela Atwell Hopkins; her two step-granddaughters, Lauren Whitney Sanderson, Kristen Blair Sanderson; and two grand dogs, Bodie and Cole. A private service celebrating her life will be held at a later date at the Sea Trail Chapel in Sunset Beach, N.C., with interment at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, Va. Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC. Atlantic Cremation Service, Wilmington. Online condolences will be accepted at www.atlanticcremation.com
